Well hey everybody, Stephen Curtis Chapman here at the CCM Cafe.
And so this is going to freak some of you out because when I tell you this,
you're going to be doing the math going there's just no way that's possible.
35 years ago this year, 1987, I released my first album.
That's when my first music came out.
[Dm] Long time ago.
I was 10 at the time, I like to point out, because so it's a children's album.
No, not true, but is true that 35 years ago, my first record firsthand came out.
So obviously there's been a, [Em]
an amazing journey of the last 35 years.
And again,
the fact that I've had the opportunity throughout those [D] years to hear stories.
Now I hear so many stories of people saying, gosh, [Gb] your song, the great adventure,
dive, [Eb] live out loud for the sake of the [Db] call.
I will be here, Cinderella.
These were all songs that were a part of [F] our life and our journey.
They [D] met me at a point in my journey and God used that song,
the message of [Db] that song to really encourage me.
Nothing humbles me more,
blesses me more than to hear that.
Just, it's amazing.
And it always just makes me say,
okay, God, that's a one more of those incredible reminders that, you know,
[Dm] more than we could ask or imagine God is always up to and doing things.
Cause I never could have imagined that 35 years ago, kid from Paducah, Kentucky,
picking up the guitar [Eb] and trying to get it in tune and writing [Em] a song or two and [Eb] to have the
opportunity to be a part of really the soundtrack.
A lot of people say like your [Dm] songs are the
soundtrack of my faith journey, my family, what an amazing thing.
And, for whatever reason,
I just still have things that I feel compelled to say, especially in these last couple of years,
three or four years of just unprecedented times in our world and our [Gb] nation on so many levels,
obviously the pandemic, the hopelessness that we've all felt, the uncertainty, the questions,
what's [D] coming, what's happening.
Is this ever gonna, is, is, is, is, are things ever going
to be back to normal?
What norm, what is even normal anymore?
And many of you who know my
family and our journey and our story 14 years ago, 2008, when we lost our [C] youngest daughter, Maria,
our life began in a time of turning everything upside down, faith [D] and everything and just saying,
what do we hold on to?
And I'm sitting here still singing these songs because
God's word is true.
He is faithful.
And somehow through the encouragement of others, the prayers
of others, I have been able, and my family and [Eb] I have been able to not lose heart, even though life
has been crushing and so, so difficult and so painful in so many ways.
And we carry that grief
with us.
Not like, yeah, that was back then and we got through it and now we're all good.
No,
because we carry those scars and those pains with us and those battle [E] scars in a way.
And as I've shared my own journey, I've been amazed how many people have said, thank you that
you didn't stop singing at that point when it would have been easy and sometimes very tempting
to do that.
But to keep saying, because now when you say, and when your family can stand and say,
or others who have walked through deep pain and grief and loss in a season like what we've been
through to say, you know what, I've walked that journey, not your journey specifically, but a
journey of deep loss, deep questioning, wrestling with God, how long, oh Lord, anger, all of those
things.
And yet can still say, God is faithful.
God is good.
God is with us.
We're going to make
it.
We're not home yet, very clearly, but we are going to make it home.
I've needed those people
in my journey desperately to just remind me, this is what's most true right now.
What seems true,
and it is true that the world is a mess and life is hard and there's pain and there are things that
we don't understand and we'll never get the answers for this side of heaven.
But what is most
true is that God is faithful.
God is in control.
He is at work right now.
Even in all of these things,
he's working them together for our good, for his glory.
If we'll trust him with it, if we'll keep
on trusting him and not lose heart.
We don't lose heart because we remember that these light and
momentary afflictions are going to be turned into a glory beyond anything we can imagine.
That's the
promise of God.
So we hold on to that even in these moments now.
So as I have done that, shared
that, encouraged others with it and been encouraged by others, I wanted to write a song really just
simply to say, don't lose heart.
Let me share with you as a friend, as a brother, my journey.
Let me just encourage you to hold on to the promises of God, to remember what is most [Bb] true.
So I wrote a song called Don't Lose Heart and it's a brand new song I'm really excited about.
And it goes like this.
[Eb]
Another sleepless night, praying hope comes with the morning light.
Right now you're feeling like you've lost this fight.
The fear is screaming [Ab] out your name.
[Eb] And you say, God help me.
And you wonder if he's even [Ab] listening.
[Eb] Truth is I wondered the very same
things.
So you don't have to [Ab] feel ashamed.
[F]
[Bb] Let me walk through this [Eb] valley with you [Bb] and tell you all
that I've [Eb] learned to be true.
Don't lose heart.
Don't you dare let go.
I've been [Cm] where you are.
You are not alone.
I [Eb] know it gets dark.
I know it gets hard, but we're gonna make it home.
So don't lose heart.
So take my hand.
I'll show you all the [Ab] scars from [Eb] where I've been.
Remind you how we both know this story ends.
And I know [Ab] you'll do the same [Eb] for me.
[Bb] These afflictions, [Eb] they're only temporary.
They're gonna [Bb] turn the glory [Eb] beyond compare.
So don't lose heart.
Don't you dare let go.
I've been [Cm] where you are.
You are not alone.
I [Eb] know it gets dark.
I know it gets hard, but we're [Cm] gonna make [Ab] it home.
[F] So don't lose hope.
[Eb] Don't lose faith.
Just hold [Ab] on tight to every [Bb] promise God has made.
You can [Fm] lose the fear
in the [Eb] light of grace.
Just [Ab] lift your eyes to your [Eb] father's face and hear the song he's singing
over you.
He says don't lose heart, because I will never [Ab] let you go.
[Eb] I'm [Fm] right where you are.
[Eb] You're safe in my arms.
So don't lose heart.
Don't you dare let go.
I've been where [Cm] you are.
You're never gonna be [F] alone.
I know it [Eb] gets dark.
I know it gets hard, but [Cm] we're gonna make [Eb] it home.
So don't lose heart.
No, [Cm] don't lose heart.
No, [Eb] don't lose heart,
because we're [Cm] gonna make [Ab] it home.
So [Eb] don't lose heart.
[Bb]
