I wasn't in New York City the other night.
[Abm] I was in Canada, I [Bb] think.
Or were we in Chicago?
We were either in Toronto, Toronto,
or we were in Chicago.
[D] This is a [D]
promotional tour, so it's like,
[G] I don't know what [D] day it is.
Every night's [A] Saturday night,
every morning's Monday morning.
[Gb]
[D] [D] But I was actually sort of grateful
not to be in my neighborhood in New York City because
[N]
What happened there?
What did I do [D] wrong?
[G] [D]
Because [N] I'm not okay with people
jumping up and down and chanting
USA, USA, because anybody dies.
I don't care who it is.
[Gb]
Not because [C] we're taking any particular side
or believing anything about anybody in particular,
but I'm opposed to the death penalty
for the same reasons, because I just think
it's bad for us.
We have a really bizarre idea about death anyway.
In this culture, we tend to raise our children
[F] with a prayer that's,
now I lay me down to sleep,
which is one of the most frightening things
I've ever heard.
You know, we have a pretty bizarre concept
of the whole deal anyway.
[Ab]
I [G] don't
My belief is that a country that didn't have
the death penalty, for instance,
would have never attacked a country
that had never attacked it,
[C] simply because someone [Eb] had to pay
for what happened on September 11th.
And [Bm] now that [E] we have Osama bin Laden's head
on the [Ab] proverbial plate,
what do we tell those people in Iraq?
And what do we tell the kids that we sent over there
who died, and their families,
and the people [N] that are living with amputations,
and serious brain injury,
which [Db] is the biggest [Eb] difference between
the statistics in this war,
and the statistics in the war that I grew up in.
[D]
Went on [Eb] a little less time than [Db] this one,
but it's [Bm] still going.
And my [D] experience is [G] that [D]
once we invade countries
we don't leave, we're [Eb] still in Germany.
We're still in [F] Japan.
And the only place that anybody ever ran us
completely out is Vietnam.
[Abm] I'm concerned.
Now I [D] am an optimist.
[C] I'm 56 years old and I just had a kid on purpose.
That's pretty [Eb] damn optimistic.
[G] [D]
[N]
Because, you know, I believe the world is what we make it.
And I [A]
try to see that [D] we show up.
But [Bm] I just feel like that [G] right now
I just got to say something.
And I think, you know, there it's out there.
[N] So now we can talk about it.
And I think that's really important
that we talk about it right now.
Because we're going to be determining
in the next few months,
because we don't have this he's out there thing
to fall back on anymore in determining
what we're going to do from this point on.
[D]
And for my part, I'm going to
I still believe music [Bm] can change the world.
So I'm just going to keep singing this song
even no matter how [G] unrealistic it sounds.
[D]
Until either I die [Bm] or it comes true,
whichever one happens first.
[G] [A]
[D]
[G]
[D] [Bm]
[G] [A]
[D] I woke up this morning
Well, I'm as [G] good
[D] Death [Dbm] machines [Bm] were rumbling
Across the [G] ground where Jesus [A] stood
[E] And a man on my [D] TV told me
Sorry,
[G] [D] there's nothing [A] anyone can do
[E] Say, [D]
I almost lost [Bm] my [D]
[G] [D]
mind
And I regained my [Bm] senses again
[D]
I looked [G] into my heart to [A] find
[E] I [D] believed in one fine day
Children of [G] Abraham
Well, [D] by the time [Dbm] this old [Bm] story
Was written [A] in Jerusalem
[E]
[D] Oh, baby, I'm only dreaming
I'm just a fool
[G] But I don't remember [Bm] learning how
To [G] play the [A] sondesco
But [E] somewhere along the way [D] I strayed
And I never looked back again
But I still find some [A] comfort now and then
[E] And [D] a storm [Bm] comes rumbling
[D]
[G] I can't lay me [D] down
The drums are [Bm] drunk
I [D]
[G] can't [A] stand the sound
I [D] believe the coming day
When my hand and mine
Will lie down in peace [Bm] together

[G] There's hatred for my [A] souls
[E]
I believe the [D] coming day
Children of [G] Abraham
Well, by the time this [B] old [Bm] story
Was written [A] in Jerusalem
[E] Yeah, we [D]
must believe in one fine day
Children of [G] Abraham
