[C] [G] [A] We [Em] met at college.
We [A] were both going to Brown.
We [G] actually [Dm] didn't meet in the last year.
She was like an acoustic bossa nova [C] musician and she was playing at an art gallery [E] that I was the [A] DJ of.
I came early and saw her playing and [Em] thought she was [A]
[Db] pretty [C] great.
But the music was really slow and it could have used a little [Dm] dance up.
I [A] actually knew some of the [Am] musicians she was playing with, so I kind of just presumptuously walked [E] up there
[A] and started an intro [Bm] to a house track and just kind of [C] looped the drums and slowly started [E] speeding it [A] up.
And then I was just like, Sophie, just follow the tempo.
I don't even know your name.
I was like, follow the tempo.
You?
[Am] I [A]
remember just being like, hey, why don't you just come over and make a song?
[N] So we started working together the next day and basically since that moment we just continued to work together.
[Ebm] [Am] We didn't really become friends until much later than that.
We were kind of just working together [Dm] at first.
[A] We didn't really like socially hang and then luckily we like [Am] each other.
I [A]
had a fellowship to go to Brazil and just continue [D] to learn the language [G] and play with the musicians [A] that I knew down there.
Tucker [G] called me up.
I was like, you're not doing it.
[A]
[Am]
So I played [Em] basketball up [A] until my senior year and then I got sick and had to stop.
[Am] So I was like, OK, I have one year of college.
I want to try to make [F] music into a [G] career.
And so I was DJing a ton and then [Am] opened up for the Knox in Providence and they kind of just became the homies.
And a couple of weeks before graduating, really, I showed them what Sophie and I had been working on at school.
[G] Just sort of as an afterthought, not really taking it that seriously.
And they were like, you should pursue this.
This is cool.
And I was like, well, OK, that was enough for me.
So I called Sophie and I was like, [Ab] let's go for it.
But we were going to take any sign from the universe that [A] we should do it.
All we needed was B-Rock from the Knox to say, hey, this is cool.
You should pursue this.
Come work out of our studio and [Ab] we're not in it.
And we went [G]
that first summer, we came right out of Brown and like just at nights when the Knox weren't there,
we'd just be there all night trying to figure out how to use the studio and stuff.
[Ab] When Tucker was showing B-Rock songs, they were just songs that I had written and he had produced.
But then our last week of [Eb] college, we [N] got together and we actually wrote Drinky together,
completely [Cm] collaboratively in the same room the whole time.
We felt really [E] proud of it, but we had no [Db] idea that anybody else was like it.
We didn't think it would be a hit or like on the radio [Em] in some countries or Grammy nominated.
Obviously, we never thought [G] anything like that.
We didn't even know that that was the day that the Grammy nominations were coming out.
And I came up to Tucker, I said, we don't hug ever.
It's just not something we do.
And I came up to him and I was like, I'm going to hug you.
I was like, something really bad [Am] or really good happened.
What is it?
[Dm] I didn't believe her at [A] all.
She's like, we got nominated.
I was like, what are you talking about?
That was not even on the radar of goals.
[G] SoundCloud is a huge part of our story because we put our song on SoundCloud and only on [Am] SoundCloud.
Our [G] agent actually found us on [Dm] SoundCloud.
From there, actually, Apple [Eb] also found us [G] from SoundCloud.
So that was our first paycheck.
The only way that we started to be able [Eb] to afford to live in New [B] York was because of somebody finding [G] our music on SoundCloud.
