[E] Hello there people, how's it going?
Today we're going to look at one of my favourite
songs which is Smokestack Lightning by Howlin' Wolf.
This was originally recorded in 1956
and is off the Chet's Records label.
OK, let's take a closer look at the lick.
OK, this lick uses all notes from the E minor pentatonic scale, so if you're jamming in
that key you can chuck in any parts of this lick and you'll sound in tune.
OK, to start
the lick we're going to do an upstroke on the high E string, and then we're going to
bring the first finger in [G] on the B string on the 3rd fret, and the second finger in
on the high E string on the 3rd fret.
And we're going to play both the strings together
and put a slight bend on it.
[Em] So you end up [G] with
[C] [A] Then, we take the second finger on
the G string on the 2nd fret, and we're going to slide [B] up to the 4th fret.
And the first
finger's going to go on the 3rd fret on the B [Em] string, and we're going to play these, the
high 3 strings, one after the other.
So now you've got
The next part is we play the
G string on the 4th fret, and just slide straight back [A] down to the 2nd.
And end the lick with
this [D] open D string, [E] and fret the 2nd fret on the D string, and [D] then open D string again,
[E] the 2nd fret on the D string.
So we put it all [Em] together, you end up with
[E] OK, there's
a variation on the lick.
It's just on the tiny, the first few notes.
The variation is
you play the high E string as an upstroke, and then you just fret this B string on the
3rd fret [Gm] on its own, and bend [Eb] that note.
And then do [Gm] the rest of the lick the same, so
you end up with
[Em] [Am] [Em]
[E] So when you put it all [G] together, you end up with
[Em] [E] [Eb] [Em]
[E] [Eb] [Em] [E]
