[C] [Em] Skip Prokop [C] has died.
I'm John Bowden from rockhistorymusic [Am].com. He was one of the founding
[G] members of one of the legendary [C] Canadian bands, Lighthouse.
At 73 [E] last year he was mentioning
that he had [Em] to retire from music because of [C] health reasons.
He retired from Lighthouse
in [A] 2014.
They were the world's [G] first 13-piece [C] rock orchestra.
Growing up in the 70s in Canada
[Em] it was hard not to have heard of Lighthouse.
Prokop [C] along with keyboardist Paul Hufford
formed the band in [Am] 1968.
In [G] 1971 alone [C] Lighthouse had three top 40 hits.
Take it slow, Out in
the [Am] Country, Hats Off to the Stranger and One Fine Morning.
[D] The latter two reaching
the top 10 in Canada.
In 1972 [Bm] Sunday Days reached number 4 and Pretty Lady at number
[B] 9 on the charts the following year.
Prokop wrote or [C] co-wrote a lot of the [D] hits for Lighthouse.
[G] They won Best Canadian [Bm] Group at the Junos, [Em] which is Canada's version of the Grammys,
[C] in 1972, [D] 73 and 74.
[G] The band disbanded in the mid 70s but got back together in the [C] early
90s.
Interestingly [D] Lighthouse turned down [C] Woodstock, which Prokop would later say was
his biggest regret.
[Am] But the following year in 1970 they played the famous [D] Isle of Wight
festival where they [F#m] were voted, along with Jimi Hendrix, [Em] Best Performers.
Skip Prokop was born [C] and raised in Hamilton, Ontario.
He was a drummer from way [Am] back and
at 17 won the [G] Canadian National Individual [C] Drumming Competition.
He told the IF Press
last year that his favorite [Em] memory was Carnegie Hall.
They were booed the first time.
[C] But
then quote, after we'd released hits like Hats Off [Am] to the Stranger and One Fine Morning
in [G] 1971, we went [C] back to Carnegie Hall.
It was a totally different audience.
It was sold
out.
They were fans and they [D] paid a lot for those tickets.
They were [G] giving us standing
ovations.
[Em] It gave me chills up and down my [C] spine.
I turned to Paul [D] Hoffert and said,
[G] we made it buddy.
And this album was recorded at Carnegie Hall [C] in 1972.
It's still one
of my favorite [D] live albums of [G] all time.
It's a very scratchy [C] compilation for me.
It's
a two LP set, but I played it so many [D] times that, well, [G] let's just say I have to get
a new one.
Interestingly, I was going through my record [C] collection yesterday and some of
you Canadian [D] buffs, [G] music buffs, will know [C] this album, Déjà Vu, Song for Everyone.
It didn't really sell.
It [D] featured [G] Cal Dodd, who had some stints on [Em] TV in the seventies,
but it was produced [C] by Skip Prokop.
It's really a great project.
[Am] Skip did a lot of
production, some solo [G] stuff, but he'll always be [C] remembered for Lighthouse.
We should point
out that the band lost their [Em] other lead singer, Bob McBride, in 1998.
