[E] So the Scattershot bass solo starts with a descending run that gets out of the melody
and into the solo.
There's a couple of different ways you can play this because it's just a
chromatic run from B down to D so there's no one exact fingering for it.
There's two
that I would commonly use, I had to commit to one for the magazine.
So the one in the
magazine is this, start on the 9th fret of the D string, finger [B] 1, and then play from
the 13th [G] fret of the A string, fingers 4, 3, [A#] 2, 1, [G#m] [G] and then 14th fret of the E string,
[C] 4, 3, [F#] 2, 1, [F]
[E] and then move your 1st finger down to the [B] 10th fret and slide.
[A#] [A] [G#]
[F#] [F] [Em] [D#] [G]
The other
option that would work would be to play with the 4th finger starting on the [G#m] 9th fret of
the D string, you play 4, 3, 2, 1, [A] [G#]
[E] go to A string 10th fret, same again, and then the
11th fret of the E string, fingers 4 and [B] 3, and just slide [A#] down.
[G#] [G] [F] [E] [G#]
[Dm] [N] That gets you into the
bass solo.
First bar of the bass solo I just sort of played a little fat groove because
I quite like the way Darren's drum part [B] sounded.
Let's do a little close up for the hands on
that.
So I slide up to the 7th fret and I play [G] from the 7th fret to the 5th fret and
back, then up to the A string 5th fret and then back down, [E] 7th and 5th frets on the E
[D]
string.
We get to the next phrase and this [Em] involves a little repeated trill pattern.
A trill is when you pluck the [Am] 1st note, then you hammer on and pull off,
[F#] [G] that kind of thing.
So in this I'm starting on the 1st finger on the D string 7th fret and I trill between
my 1st and 4th [A] fingers and then come [F#] down [B] with the 3rd finger on the 9th fret of the
A [A] string.
[F#] [G] So that's just a good exercise to practice around the [E] neck.
[D] [A#m] [Am] [B] [Am]
[A#m] [D] [C#m] [G]
So take that phrase,
work it around until your hand's comfortable [A] with it [F#] [B] and then [A] 7th fret [B] to 9th and a slide
[C#] [B] up to the [A] 11th.
[E] There's a little muted [N] note that I play just before the trill, so there's
a little sort of percussive hit on the A [A] string
[C#]
and then you do that quick slide.
You don't
want to hear it going, it needs to be just getting into that 2nd [Em] note.
Back down to the
7th and 9th frets, [A] [B]
so we get
[A] [B] [G] then up to the 9th fret of the G [E] string [G] and this time [E] instead
of a slide it's a hammer on.
[Bm] [G]
Then we come back down [E] [D] [C#]
[D] [F#m] [B] and play that phrase.
[D] 7th fret to
the 9th,
[E] [D] 7th [C#] fret to the 6th, then 6th, [D] [A]
7th, [F#m] 7th to the 9th [B] and that last one's a slide
[E] 7th to 9th.
[D] [E]
[C#] [D] [B]
So the whole [A] phrase is
[B] [A] [B] [E] [D]
