I'm Tom.
I work here at PRS in the SC department.
I'm going to go over a setup for you on this model, which is a Zack Meyers model.
[Bb]
Single cut, semi-hollow, [E] mahogany [Bb] neck, mahogany back, thick maple top with a flame maple veneer, 2.45. [Bb] pickups, 2-vine, 2-tone, 3-way toggle. Scale length is 24 and a half inches long. It works good. So basically, kind of just go over [Eb] the whole thing, do little minor adjustments here and there, make sure it's [Bb] good before it hangs out. What I usually do first, take the top cover off, check to make sure the nut's not hanging over the edges. If I do, I take [Eb] a razor blade, shave it down, make sure it's nice and smooth, it's not snagging up on anything. [G] Then basically, give it a once-over look, make sure there's no dings, [Bb] dents, scratches, make sure the specs are right. This color's Trampis Green. Then basically just plug it in, [A] make sure you get sound out of everything. [Db] [Em]
I tune up [G] the pitch before I [E] do any of the adjustments just [N] to make sure it's at playing tension. If you do the adjustments [Ebm] without it tuned, [G] it might be a little bit less than playing tension or more, so then when you finally put it in tune to heat, the neck will move and it just won't be where [Ab] you set it previously. The [Eb] first thing is check the neck relief. [A] We [Eb] want it pretty flat, that's the way Paul likes it. First [N] finger on the first fret, and I put a finger on the last fret. I kind of tap the third string to have the string bounce off of the fret. We just want a little bit of bounce off the string, a little bit of play with it, [Bbm] which means the neck is really, [G] really flat. Now check the [Bb] action [Gb] at the 12th fret for the [A] high E and the low [G] E strings. For the high E, [Eb] I put it right at 2.30 seconds, maybe [Bb] a slight bit under that. [Eb] The low E action at the [C] 12th fret, we have it right about [Eb] 2.30. seconds to 3.30 seconds. [Bb] This one's already a pretty good set. If I need to adjust it, this little tool, I'll just take it and I'll [G] back that screw out a little bit just to start to raise [Eb] it. It's sitting right where I want, 2.30 seconds on the high E, [Db] 2.30 seconds [Ab] on the low E. Then [Bbm] pick up height, [F] fret both the high and low E strings. [E] Then what I'll [Eb] do, I'll lower the pickup a little bit, take [Bb] my ruler, put it right on the magnet, and on the high E string, the low E string. For the neck [Db] pickup, I want about [Eb] 2.30. seconds on the high E side. For the low E side, put it right on the magnet, right on 3.30 seconds. Then the bridge pickup, [Bb] this one sits a little low, [G] raise it up. This one, for the treble pickup, on the high E side, put it right on the magnet while fretting the last fret. 3.30 seconds on that side, on the low E, right [Ab] about [Eb] 3 [A].30 seconds on the low E side of [N] the treble pickup with it fretted the whole time. Looks good. Also, I'll check the nut height. This nut's a little bit high, it [Bb] looks like the high E string, this nut's sitting in the groove too well. It's a little tight, so I need to open it up and let the string sit there smoothly so you don't get any [G] binding when you tune down or up. So, start, pop the string out, low E string, take my gauge, start the side, open it up a little bit, go to A. Be careful not to scratch the headstock. Looks good, so, stretch the string one more time, [Eb] [E] [A] [D]
play a little [E] bit. [G] [A] [E]
And then [C] what I'll usually do is I'll go [F] down the neck chromatically just to make sure there's no [N] buzz on any of the strings. If [Gm] [G] you can't find any, I'll [E] check the pickup. [A] [E] Make sure everything works. [B] [Gb]
[B] [E]
[Db] [E] [B]
[A] [E] 7.5,. [A] still in tune. [Bb] The nut cut, action set, pickup [Em] height, the intonation's usually set [G] pretty well from the factory from [G] Korea, but [E] on this model we have our new [Bb] adjustable stop tail, so [A] basically I'll [Ab] just check the intonation. And then that's pretty [Db] easy. You [E] just hit the open string, tune it, so this is E. [Gb] You hit [Gm] the 12th fret harmonic [Am] [E] and then the 12th fret fretted. And on [Ab] your tuner, you'll see where each note hits. And basically you want all three of the notes, [Em] the open, harmonic, and the [Dbm] 12th fret fretted [B] note to be the [E] same pitch. So, [B] I guess I'll hit some more. [N] And basically I'll wipe it down with some microfiber rags and give it a once over to make sure I didn't scratch anything when I was working on it. Take the plastic off the [Bb] back of the tool cavities [E] and then we'll put it back in the bag [Gb] and then it goes out to the warehouse [G] and then shipped out to [E] the local stores across the U.S. And all [Bb] the ones, all the SEs that are sold in the U.S. come to the factory in Maryland and then to the SE [A] department back here and then we have the inspectors, including me, check them all. So, all the [Bb] ones that are in the stores in the U.S. come here for, get a check before they go out.
