Thank you so much, Taylor.
To help celebrate you, I am so pleased to welcome
another great songwriter, Sarah Bareilles,
for a special tribute.
Thank you so much, David, for giving me the opportunity
to celebrate a true songwriting icon.
Ms.
Taylor Swift has proven herself over and over again
to be an extraordinary storyteller, an innovator,
a leader, an advocate, an activist,
and this woman shows no signs of stopping.
To share a little brief story, I got invited out
to join Taylor to sing my song Brave on her Red Tour
several years ago and had a horrible malfunction
of my in-ears and couldn't adjust quickly
to the amount of applause that she deals with
on any given night.
So, little old Sarah going out to a stadium show
and hearing the amount of teenage girls screaming
was something I had to adjust for
and couldn't hear the music and I sang horribly.
And dear, sweet Taylor came to my room after the show
where I was in tears, felt so embarrassed
that I had embarrassed her somehow.
And she was so deeply kind and so deeply compassionate
and so comforting and I will never, ever forget
that wonderful kindness that you offered me, Taylor.
So, thank you for being a friend to songwriters,
to artists, for lifting other people up,
giving them opportunities that they wouldn't have otherwise
and for continuing to be a total badass leader
in our community.
I look up to you so much, so thank you for everything.
I want to also thank the NMPA for all they do for songwriters.
Where would we be without you?
Truly, you are our safeguard in so many ways.
So, thank you for this beautiful moment
and I wanted to sing a song called Clean
from Taylor's album, 1989.
And I've thought a lot about the moves you're making
right now, Taylor, in taking back your own narrative
and I feel this song, which always touched me
off that record, about rebirth and renewal
and going through hardship and taking your own story back.
I feel like I'm watching you do it [E] right now
and it's very, very inspiring.
So, here is Clean for you, Taylor.
