Bar rooms, whatever you want to call them, when I [D] was 12 years [F#] old, see, singing country music.
We didn't do that in Louisiana.
You know, if you're tall enough to put your money on the bar, you can go in.
I'm one of the lucky guys in country [A#] music.
Because by the time I [F#] was 14 years old, I got to play music with [D] people like George Jones,
and Meryl Haggard, [D#] Conway Twitty, Loretta Lynn, Kev [D] Kwanen, Ray Price, a whole bunch of them good country singers, you know.
That was back when we had stylists, we called them [F#] vocalists.
When they came on the radio, you [D] knew right away who was singing the song.
You didn't have to wonder who was singing, [Dm] and you didn't have to wait for the disc jockey to tell you who was singing.
[F#] You knew who it was.
Nowadays, I can't tell them apart.
They all sound alike to me.
I ain't kidding you.
I don't know what the word is.
[D] But a couple years ago, my old [G#] record label called up and said,
Sam, we're [F#] going to a tribute album to George Jones.
We'd like you to be on the album.
I said, I'd love to be on the album.
What songs is everybody doing?
They said, everybody gets to do their favorite George Jones song.
I said, well that's great, because when I was about 14 years old,
[D] I used to do an old song that Jones had out, [F] I think in 1962.
It was just a good old honky-tonk song.
It went something like,
[A] An empty bottle, [E] a broken heart, [Bm] and you're still on [F] my mind.
[A#] [G#] Yeah, that was back before Jones started drinking [Dm] all that cough syrup.
You know, [D] he was sick hard.
You know what [A#] I mean.
Anyway, they said, you can't do [C#] that one.
I said, well that don't seem [F#] right.
Everybody gets to do their favorite Jones song.
I don't.
They said, we already have one picked out [F] for you.
I said, what might that be?
And they said, [E] he'd sing all of them [C] till I drowned.
[F] She [D] told me [A#] you'll forget in time.
As the years [C] went through, holy God, now I'm alive.
She still prays for me.
[F]
[C] Kept her happy, [F] oh Lord.
When I freeze [A#] down,
He still loves me [C] through it all.
[G]
I'll bring him [F] back again.
[C#] He gets the letters [F#] back,
1819, [B] 16th Moon.
The [C#] Adelaide man.
Every single [F#] time I look at you,
I can see you.
Oh, but I can [B] see no tear.
Oh, it's [C#] so bad.
Her stomach's [F#] my religion.
Hey, you know,
I used to call her baby honey.
They brought ice cream [B] from the store.
And soon they'll carry [C#] him home.
[D#]
[C#] I used to call her baby honey.
[F#] [C#]
You know, she came to see me one last time.
[A#m] [B] Oh, we all want to shoot.
[C#] [G#] And it can't [C#] run, Mama.
[F#] Oh, people heard.
I saw my husband die.
[G#]
[F#] They were angry, [A#m] but [B] they were strong.
And some of them died.
[C#] [D#]
[C#] I [D#] saw my [D] husband die.
[B] To death.
[G#] [F#] To death.
[N] To death.
