Time now to welcome the man who's nominated for no less than three Brits at next week's awards,
Sam Fenders here!
Hey, oi!
So, you've announced today that you're actually going to be performing as well, though.
Yes, yes, we are, aye.
Brilliant.
Gosh, that's exciting, isn't it?
Yeah, yeah.
We're pretty buzzing for it, like, it's going to be mad.
Yeah, it's going to be a big night for you, all in all.
Yeah, I'm sure it is.
One of the nominations that you're in is,
it's one of the four brand new categories of Brits,
and it's open to public vote, right, for the fans.
It's rock alternative.
Yes.
It's a category that you're in along with Coldplay, Tom Grennan,
Glass Animals and Wolf Alice.
Is it big for you and important for you that the fans actually kind of get to vote
for their favourite artists?
Oh, of course, aye.
I think it's, I think it'll be lush, like, if we'll get that one,
particularly, but just to know that our fan base is, like, you know, active.
But I think they purposely put it on, they put the vote on TikTok,
purposely to, like, alienate my army of uncles and aunties in Newcastle
on TikTok, like, who would go and vote for us.
So, like, you know, but yeah, it would be lush to take that one home, you know.
Yeah, that would be amazing, wouldn't it?
If you want to vote for Sam or any of the other acts in that category,
well, votes are open until Thursday at 6pm.
Now, you won the Rising Star, didn't you, in 2019?
Well, Ken, is the award at home in his mum's house?
No, it's not.
Is it in his gran's house?
No, it's not.
Where is it?
It's in the pub.
It's in the pub.
I put it on the
We've turned it into a beer pump.
Yeah, we've literally turned it into a beer pump,
and we want to hopefully do it again, because, I mean,
I can see there's another four pumps there that I reckon would be good.
Yeah.
So, hopefully, we'll see what we can do.
You know what, though?
I mean, some people might think it's a bit of a joke or a novelty,
but did that pub, like, play a part in your career?
Yeah, so I was discovered there by my manager.
My manager was looking after a guy called Ben Howard,
who's a class songwriter and good friend.
And, obviously, back then, they'd actually won a Brit Award,
and he came back home.
My manager's from my hometown, and he came back home to celebrate
and, like, was walked into the pub where I was working.
I was 18, pulling pints, just completely failed my A-levels.
And my bar manager, who looks like Winston Churchill,
told us to get out behind the bar.
He normally used to tell us off for playing guitar,
so it was like, I thought, what's going on here?
He's telling us to play guitar,
because he knew that he was a manager.
And then, yeah, it's eight years later, here we are, you know?
Yeah, well, let's hope you can fill those pumps up with a few more awards.
It's been a long slog, but, yeah, hopefully we'll take one home.
Aw.
You've also been nominated for Album of the Year.
So let's listen to the track.
It's called Spit Of You.
That's [D] me and you, talk to you.
Spot on a familiar face in there, Sam.
How did that come about?
I kind of accosted
I saw him in a hotel a couple of years ago,
when we hadn't even released the first album,
and I just kind of ran over and attacked him, I think.
Yeah, Stephen Graham, of course, that we're talking about.
I went, oh, my God, it's Stephen Graham.
Yeah, yeah.
I went, you know what, I was like, I think you're a national treasure.
And then he turned around and was like, are you Sam Fender?
And I was just like, what?
He's like, you know me?
And it was just one of them, you know?
I was, like, so buzzed, you know?
And he was so sweet.
It turns out, him and his wife listened to my first EP.
They were, like, fans.
We just kind of became pals.
We took each other's number.
And then he asked me to, down the line, asked us to
if I had any songs for a movie that he was working on,
a film that he's working on, which has just come out,
and it's stunning.
It's called Boiling Point.
It's about a chef.
It's a one-shot.
It's a stunning
It looks good.
So, subsequently, because of that, I gave this song,
which goes to the end of the film,
and Phil Barantini, the director, who's a great lad,
we just all kind of became pals.
And then, since I did that, I kind of rang them up.
I was like, do you want to do a music video as well?
Did you a favour?
I was like, yeah, I scratched your back, mate.
I know, they did.
They've been amazing, you know?
