In the studio with me this afternoon here on Lightning 100 is Jeff Bridges, Ryan Bingham and T-Bone Burnett.
And Ryan, you got to make your acting debut in the film Crazy Heart.
And was that, what was that like trying to portray an actor when you're really a musician?
Well it was cool, I mean, it was nice that they got the whole band in there to do that scene with Jeff.
I mean, we're just a roadhouse band, we play in bowling alleys for real, so we just got to be ourselves, you know, it's a lot of fun.
You played Tony in the film, but you're Ryan Bingham, and tell me a little bit about your story.
Because you're a young guy, if you listen to you on the soundtrack, I'm thinking you're in your 40s, but really, are you 28?
And your voice, I want you to sing a song here so people can kind of hear what you sound like here.
But they wouldn't know that you were 28 by listening to you.
And tell me a little bit about your story, because you've had a lot of life experiences that maybe helped you write this terrific song that's kind of the heart of the movie.
You know, I don't know if it was just kind of where I grew up or how I grew up.
My dad and my uncles had this bar out between Hobbs and Carlsbad, New Mexico.
And it was 40 miles from the nearest town.
Back in those days, like in the 60s and 70s, it was just ranchers and oilfield workers that would come on their lunch breaks and come over there.
And then at night time, they'd hang out in this bar, and it was just like, it was the Wild West.
There wasn't any law, and there was no rules necessarily.
So I kind of grew up around my dad and my uncles and a lot of their friends, hanging out in the afternoons.
They'd take me to the bar and I'd shoot and pull and stuff.
I was 11, 12 years old, drinking beer and smoking cigarettes and doing all the bad stuff.
And so this bad boy, this character, was kind of a guy that I could imagine coming over in the afternoon when I was a kid and hanging out with my uncle or something.
And having beers and listening to old records around the fire.
And so I just kind of went off of that.
Do you know what song you want to do?
Do you want to do The Weary Kind?
Yeah, I can play that for you.
This is the theme from Crazy Heart.
You don't get to hear this song until the end of the movie in its entirety.
So let's play that here.
This is Ryan Bingham, live on Lightning 100.
