[D] [G] I was a stranger in the city.
Out of [C] town were the people I knew.
[D] I had that feeling of [Dbm] self-pity.
[Bm] What to do, what to do, [E] what to do?
[Dbm] [Am] The outlook was [F] decidedly blue.
[G] But [Bm] as I walked [E] through the [Bm] foggy streets [E] alone,
[Bm] it turned [E] out to be the [C] [D] luckiest day
[B] I've [G] known.
[Dm] [D]
[G] A [Fm] foggy day.
[Am]
[B] London had [G] me [E] low [Gbm] [G] and had me [Gb] down.
[Bm] [D] I [G] viewed the morning with [Eb] alarm.
[Em] The British
[D] Museum [A] had lost [D] its charm.
[Em] [Am] How long, [D] I wondered, [Am] could [G] this thing [B] last?
[G] But the age [Dbm] of miracles [Am] had [D] passed.
[Am] For [E] suddenly I [Em] saw [D] you there.
And [G] through [C] foggy London [G] town, [C] the sun [G] was [Em] shining [C] [Am] [G] everywhere.
[Cm] [Ab] How long, [Eb] I wondered, [Bbm] could this thing [C] last?

Thank you very much.
Thank you.
Thank you.
I'm very glad to be here.
I lived next door to Ira and Lee Gershwin for 30 years.
It was one of the joys of my life to talk to him about the composers that he worked with,
his brother George, and with other composers, other people.
He was easy to talk to, one-on-one especially.
He was kind of quiet and watched a lot, rather than kind of entered into a large group of people.
But he was fun, quietly.
Told good ghost stories.
In fact, he told me some really weird things that went on in my house before I moved in there.
I mean, some weird things happened later too, but we don't have time to go into that.
[B] It was a joy for me, though.
He wrote this next song at 1019, because George and Ira lived together at [E] 1019, the house that I live in now.
And George [N] died before the melody of the verse was written.
So the only piece of music that Ira wrote was this verse.
And since he couldn't read, he sang it to Vernon Duke, who [Eb] wrote it down for him.
The more I read the papers, [Ab] the less [Eb] I [Cm] comprehend
[Bbm] The world [Eb] and all [Bbm] its capers, [Eb] [Fm] and how [D] it [Ebm] all will end
[Ab]
[Bb] [Db] Nothing seems to be [Fm]
lasting, [Gm] but that [C] isn't [Eb] our affair
[Ab] [Bb]
We've got something [G] permanent, [C]
[Am] I mean, in [C] the way [Bbm] we [Cm] care
It's very [Bb] clear our [Bbm]
[Eb] love is here to [G] stay
[Db] [Eb] Not [Gm] for a year, [Bb] [Db] but ever [Eb] and a day
[D] [F] [Cm] The radio [B] and [Bbm] the telephone
[Eb] and the movies [Db] that we [Bbm] know
[Gb] May just [Fm] be passing [C] fancies [Fm] and [D] in time
[Bbm] may [F] go
[Eb]
But, [Cm] oh [Fm] my dear,
[Bbm] our [Db] love is [F] here to stay
[Cm]
[B] Together [Gm] we're
[Db] going a long, [Ebm] long [Eb] way
[D] In [G]
time [Cm] the Rockies may [F] crumble, [Bbm]
Gibraltar [Eb] may tumble
They're only made [D] of clay, [F] but [Cm] our [C] love is [Bbm] here [Db] to [Ab] stay
[F] I [Ebm] can't tell you [F] what a thrill it's been [D] to be a part of this evening.
[Fm] [Bbm] All these wonderful people on this [Eb] show.
I met [D] Angie Dickinson in Ira's house.
[E] Ira loved Angie.
He had very [Abm] good taste.
[Eb] [Gm] And I met Michael Feinstein.
[D] He's my sixth [Db] kid.
I'm proud to [Eb] say.
