So, John and my ex-husband, Rob, wrote a song together, and they were playing it.
I heard, Rob heard them playing it in the hall, and I heard the melody, I couldn't hear the lyrics,
and I love the melody.
I said, can I have that song?
And they said, no, it's for Jimmy Moon.
I know, [A] I was waiting until this [E] moment to say it in front of you.
[N] It worked.
So, we'll check this out.
So I said, well, I know where [Bbm] I am in the pecking order.
And six [F] months went by, and Jimmy Moon [Eb] didn't record it, and I said, do you think I could have it [Bb] now?
And they said, [Eb] she might still record it.
[N] So, this is totally true.
So, in the meantime, our son, who was in eighth grade, was doing a project on the Civil War.
And I said, you know, you have cache ancestors on both sides, Confederate and New York.
And I took him on the Civil War database to show him, and there was a picture of our ancestor,
William Cash, on the Civil War database.
So, I looked up in my family history, [Bb] and I found a young woman,
[F] [Bb] Mary Ann Cash, 20 years [Gb] old at the start of the Civil War, and I wanted to put William and Mary Ann together.
[N] So, I called Rodney, and I said, Jimmy Moon's never going to record this.
I said, why don't you rewrite the lyrics with me, based on my Civil War [Bb] ancestors, and the [Gb] tradition of those great Appalachian narrative ballads.
He said, okay, I'll do that.
So, we rewrote those lyrics [F] to [Gb] John's melody.
[Bb] William and Mary Ann, and [Eb] [Bb] [Gm] when
[Bb] [Eb] the master calls [Bb] the roll.
[Eb] [Bb]
[Eb] [Bb]
[F] [Dm] [Eb] [Bb]
[Gm] [Eb] [Bb]
[Fm] [Bb]
[Eb] [Bb]
[F] Just [Bb] [Ebm] as faithful [Bb] as the days long, [Eb] careful with his [F] money.
Saw the [Eb] open [Bb] labyrinth, [Eb] and [Bbm] news for you to [F] deliver.
Three [Eb] months later, [Bb] plans were made to land, [Eb] down by the King [F] James River.
Long the season [Bb] may come, [F] long the season [Bb] may go.
[Eb] While the lovers join [Bb] together, will [Dm] forever be [Gm] made whole.
[F]
[Eb] When the master [Bb] calls the roll.
[Eb] [Bb] [F]
[Bb] [Eb] [Bb] [F]
[Gm] [Bb] [Eb] [F]
[Bb] Oh my darling, will you leave, [Eb] take [Bb] me to the altar.
[F] I [Dm] [Eb] don't have the [Bb] strength to watch you [Gm] as you leave, but [Eb] my love will never [F] falter.
[Bb] Oh my darling Mary Ann, [Eb] you march [Bb] to [F] war as calling.
[Bb] Somewhere [Eb] far across [Bb] these southern lands, [Ebm] a band [Bb] of brothers follow.
[F] My tender bride, [Eb] the [Gm] tides demand, [Eb] that I'll leave [Bb] you with your mother.
[F] [Eb] With my father's rifle [Bb] in one hand, [Eb] your luck, it [Bbm] tells her.
[F] Long the season [Bb] may come, long the season may go.
[Eb] Beware the storm [Bb] clouds gather, take heed [Dm] dear [Gm] immortal soul.
[Bb] [Eb] When the master [Bb] calls the roll.
[Eb] [Bb] [F]
[Bb] [Eb] [Bb] [F] [Gm]
[Bb] [Eb] [F]
[Bb] Can this union be preserved, [Eb] [Bb] soldier boy of sky.
[Eb] I will never [Bb] travel back to earth, [Eb] but [Bb] not for lack of time.
It's a love of one true heart at last, [Eb] made the [Bb] boy a hero.
Bought [Eb] a rifle, a bow [Bb] and a cannon blast, [Eb] cut [Bb] him down to zero.
[F] Oh Virginia, [Eb]
[Gm] Windsor King, [Eb] I'll see you [Bb] when I'm younger.
[F] And [Eb] I'll know [Bb] you by your hills again, [Ebm] this time from six [F] feet under.
[Bb] [F] Long the season [Bb] may come, [F] long the [Bb] season may go.
[Eb] One man is [Bb] torn asunder, will one [Dm] someday be [Gm] made whole.
[F] When [Eb] the master calls [Bb] the roll.
[Eb] Though the [Bb] storm clouds gather, let the union be [Gm] made whole.
