[Am] I'm Romero Lubambo and today we're going to talk about some simple secrets [Eb] to play, for
example, [Em] bossa nova.
We have many different rhythms that [Ab] come from Brazil and we're going [F] to talk about all [Eb] of
them with those lessons.
But right now I would like to [Bb] present some simple [E] secrets [Gm] to play better the bossa nova,
to have a little [G] bit more of the feeling.
First of all, the bossa nova came from the [Eb] samba type of pattern, just slowing down and
using different chords.
We have to do what our fingers on [B] the guitar, we have to do what the percussion [Bb] players
do in the school of [Em] samba.
In the carnival parade, for example, [Ab] there are 500 guys playing percussion, so we have
to translate that [E] into the guitar.
[Eb] We [Em] have to think about those three fingers [F] playing [Eb] harmony, the thumb playing the bass
or the role of what we call [E] the surdos, and the [Gm] left hand playing the [E] chords.
So [C] every single one [Bb] of these elements is very important [E] to present very well [G] the type of
music that you're playing, whatever it [E] is, but bossa nova is very specific.
So let's think about, first of all, the thumb.
[Eb] A lot of people don't know what to do with the thumb.
[Cm] The simplest thing to [Bb] think is the thumb would [E] play quarter notes, only quarter notes, related
[A] with the chord that you're playing.
For example, [G] if you're playing A [A] major,
[D]
[A] [D]
[A]
[Bm] the thumb is playing [E] only quarter notes.
[Eb] I'm thinking about the guy playing the percussion [E] surdo.
He's [A] marking [Ab] the tempo for everybody else [Em] to play the other [E] instruments on top of that.
And the [Ab]
[Bb] three fingers here pulling [E] the strings, plugging the strings that are actually showing
the chords, I like to think about those guys, the way the tambourine plays.
[Dm]
[E] [F] [C] That's what they do.
[Dbm] So
[D]
this is the basic [Eb] thing.
So I'm imitating on the guitar, [E] the percussion [G] [E] ensemble, [Eb] translating to these fingers here.
[C] So if you put together tambourines here with [Bb] surdos here, [A] we have
[D]
[A]
So this is a simple thing to practice, keeping the thumb playing just quarter notes.
[Bb] This is simple to [E] start.
So I think [G] for now, it would be a [A] good practice to just practice these parts with different [Gb] chords.
[D]
[Dbm] [E]
[Em] You can do so much with just this.
[A]
[Eb] [Dm]
[Dbm] [A]
Same [D] thing always.
[Dbm] [E]
[A]
Boa sorte com a [E] música!
Romero no bando!
Tchau!
