[A] [D] Hello CBC Music audience, you're [B] looking at Robin Hitchcock, which is me.
Here's my face.
[F] Hope [D] you're well.
Here we go.
Every [B] songwriter has a different flavour that they're really good at emotionally.
There's a certain [G] feeling of really good Van Morrison or great Brian Ferry [E] or, you know.
Some songwriters will just cover [D] everything like Dylan and The Beatles in a way,
but most people have their frequency that they get.
And [G] so I picked these five songs [Gm] and, you know, [E] Joe was happy with them as well.
[D] I felt just each of them [Gb] had a feeling [Bm] that I wished, that I liked.
I wished I'd written it, but you know, [A] I can sing it.
[Bb]
[Eb]
[Bb]
Man in my shoes runs a light and all the papers lie [Eb] tonight.
But falling over you is the news of the day.
There's something [C] about it that is, [Bb] well, [E] I don't know, it just gives you,
it's a sort of spiritual, [Gb] romantic [C] feeling.
There's a little bit of a shiver as if you really are [Ab] considering the ghost in [Dm] somebody.
But [B] also it's just such an incredible thing to say, [G] the ghost in you, [Bb] she don't fade.
[Eb] Turn [Gb] [Bb] you on.
Turn you on [G] is one of [Gb] the great romantic [Eb]
songs.
[G] Brian Ferry is one of the great romantics.
[E] I'm a huge fan of Brian Ferry because I think I'm [G] so unlike him in [F] a way.
You know, I've had New York [C] romances, but even before I had them I still had that line,
is it raining in New York down [Bbm] Fifth Avenue and off Broadway after dark?
I love the [Gb] lights, don't you?
You know, there's that, he's [Bb] sort of considerate.
Maybe he's just being polite, but you know, I love the lights, don't you?
It's that sort of, [C] it's very un [B]-macho.
Day [E] you're not on.
[Bm] If one night you're walking way above [A] the ground, do yourself a favour, don't look down.
[E] It's sort of about finding yourself, I think anyway,
I mean I'm just interpreting [Abm] other people's songs,
but it's easier to interpret other people's songs than to interpret your own often.
[D] To me it feels like about being [A] completely [F] out of your depth,
just being somewhere you have no idea [E] where it is.
You're not in control of the environment [B] around you.
If you look down you might fall.
If you're out of town it's dark, you don't know where you are, you could get lost,
you could be stolen by the night, you know.
[E] There's a sort of vulnerability [Ab] to it.
Know that you [B] are fine.
[Gb] Boats are just a huge part of Norwegian [Eb] life,
[Gb] and [B] this seems to be, the picture I [Eb] get from this is [B] of long,
sometimes endless Scandinavian twilight with these [Gb] [Eb] boats, you know,
ploughing back and forth in [D] the gloom with [B] their little shimmering [Eb] lights,
and then it seems like one of them just disappears.
It's been forever since you [B] lost that boat.
[E]
It almost sounds to me like it is actually being sung by [Eb] kind of [Ab] disembodied spirits
who [F] are guardians of these [Ebm] ships, and one of the ships has disappeared,
and it's a kind [Ab] of lament for it.
I don't know, I've actually never asked her about [Fm] the words.
Days are bright [Cm] and filled with pain.
I just [Bb] imagine this whacking great [F] sort of spectral galleon,
but sort [Bb] of shimmering because it's made of crystal, which is [B] just full of pleasure, [F]
you know.
All the [Eb] joys that Los Angeles [F] could bring in its heyday,
none of which brought happiness but all of which brought pleasure,
[Fm]
and activated [Eb] people's synapses in such a [Fm] provocative way,
[Eb] which Jim Morrison himself kind of [Fm] eventually was enthralled [Db] to,
but, [Ab] you know, [Eb] a thousand girls, a thousand [C]
thrills.
