This man can still bring a hot flash on in me, it's just embarrassing.
Listen, the group, the band, is considered to be one of the great American rock groups of the 60s and 70s,
yet you grew up in Canada, you're half Jewish, Native American.
How did you get into what is sort of thought of as uniquely southern, you know, American roots music?
You know, when I was 16 years old, I got hired by Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks,
and I went from Canada, from Toronto, down to the Mississippi Delta,
and for me it was like going to the holy land of rock and roll, you know, where music grew out of the ground.
And that had such a heavy effect on me.
I mean, it made such a huge impression on me that it started seeping out in the songs that I wrote a few years later.
And I had, you know, a fresh eye and a fresh ear for it, so.
And I want to tell people, because I want you to sing, I'm dying for folks to hear this new sound.
Many people don't know that for the last three decades, you've done the music for some of Martin Scorsese's greatest films,
Raging Bull, Shutter Island, The Departed.
How?
How did this happen?
Well, he's a great music person himself, right?
Right.
And because we were really good friends and everything, we would ask, we would collaborate on ideas,
and it's just such a pleasure to do it with him.
Will you sing now for me?
I'd be happy to sing for you.
Or for us, I don't mean me.
Please.
Ladies and gentlemen, here to perform Don't Live Here No More from the album How to Be Clairvoyant, Robbie Robertson.
