[Am] [G] [C]
Aloha [D] everyone!
Today we have a tutorial for Riptide by Vance Joy.
So it's a holiday weekend here in the States, which means lots of barbecuing and lots of jamming.
And Riptide is an awesome song for a group jam because it only has four easy chords.
[Am] A minor, [G] G, C, [C] [F] and F.
And you can play the Island Strum on the entire song.
You can go here to the Stand By Me tutorial to learn the Island Strum more fully.
I'm going to show you right here.
You can just see if you can pick it up.
[B] A minor, you're going to [Am] go down, down, up, up, down, [G] up, down, down, up, up, [C] down, up, down, down, up, up, down, up.
If you [E] already know your Island Strum pretty well, you can try a couple of Island Strum variations
that Vance Joy has in his original song.
And I'm going to [Am] use them in the playthrough as well.
So on the verses, he drops the first up on the Island Strum.
So it sounds like this.
It goes down, down, up, [G] down, up, down, down, up, [C] down, up, down, down, up, down, up.
I'll break it down in more detail after the playthrough.
On the chorus, [G] we're going to do a chucking Island Strum.
So that means you're going to chuck [Am] on the Down Strums after the first one.
It sounds like this.
It goes down, chuck, up, [G] down, chuck, up, [C] down, chuck, up.
It's more rhythmic.
It's really fun.
So [Dm] just stay tuned after the playthrough.
And I'll break down those strums and teach them to you slowly so then you can pick them up and play them faster.
OK, let's play the song.
Here we go.
One, two, one, two, [Am] three, four.
[G]
[C] [Am] [G]
[C] [Am] I was scared [G] of dentists and [C] the dark.
[Am] I was scared [G] of pretty [C] girls and starting conversations.
[Am] All [G] my friends have [C] turned green.
[Am] You're the [G] magician's assistant in [C] their dreams.
Ah, ooh.
[G] [C]
[G] [C] And they come [Am] unstuck.
[G] Coming [C] down to the river.
Taking [Am] away to the dark [G] side.
I won't [C] be your left hand man.
I love [G] you when you sing [C] that song, I got a love [Am] for my bro.
[G] cause you're gonna sing [C] the words wrong.
[Am] There's a [G] story that I think [C] you'll love.
[Am] This guy [G] decides to quit his [C] job and head to New York City.
[Am] This [G] cowboy's running [C] from his cell.
[Am] She's been [G] living on the [C] highest shelf.
[Am]
[G] I ooooh, [C] [Am] I [G] ooooh, [C] and they come [Am] unstuck.
They're [G] running down the [C] river, taking [Am] away to the dark [G] side.
I wanna [C] be your left hand man.
I love [G] you when you're [C] singing that song.
I got love [Am] in my throat [G] cause you're gonna sing [C] the words wrong.
[Am] I just wanna, I just wanna [G] know [C] if you're gonna, if you're gonna [F] stay.
[Am] I just gotta, I just [G] gotta know.
[C] I can't have it, I can't [F] have it any other way.
[Am] I swear [G] she's destined [Am] for the screen.
Closest thing [G] to Michelle [C] Pfeiffer that you ever see.
[Am] Oh, lady, [G] coming down to [C] the riptide, taking away to [Am] the dark side.
[G] I wanna [C] be your left hand man.
I love [G] you when you're [C] singing that song.
Man, I got a [Am] lump in my throat [G] cause you're gonna sing [C] the words wrong.
[Am] Oh, lady, [G] [C] coming down to the riptide, taking away to the dark side.
[G] I wanna be [C] your left hand man.
[Am] I [G] love you when you're [C] singing that song.
Man, I got a lump in my throat [G] cause you're gonna [C] sing the words wrong.
Man, I got a lump [Am] in my [G] throat cause you're gonna sing the [C] words wrong.
[Am] [Dm]
Okay, now let's break down those strums a little bit.
Um, so the [Am] first strum, yeah?
We'll just play it nice [N] and slow on the A minor.
It's just getting used to skipping the up strum.
So the key is you wanna keep your arm moving.
You just wanna not touch the strings, okay?
So it'll look like this.
Slow, two, three, four.
[Am] Down, down, up, down, up.
Down, down, up, down, up.
Down, down, up, down, up.
Okay, let's try the chord pattern.
A minor, G and C.
Ready?
A minor, two, three, four.
Down, down.
[G] [C]
One more time.
[Am]
Down, down.
[G] [C]
That's it.
You [N] just have to play it slowly and get used to not hitting the up strum.
And then build it up faster to the pace of the song.
Okay, on the chucking island strum, if you haven't chucked before,
what we're essentially doing is scraping the strings.
So you [Am] are strumming, right?
And then you're muting with your palm.
You're just pushing your palm against the fretboard after you do the strum.
So slow-mo it's like this.
And [D] then fast, it starts sounding like this.
[G] They call it a chuck because it makes a like a sound, right?
So you can just do it the slow-mo way [G] until you [Am] find that chuck.
So let's do it really slow, the chucking island strum, all right?
If you break it down on the A minor, it sounds like this.
Down, chuck up.
Up, chuck up.
Down, chuck up.
Up, chuck up.
Down, up.
Up, chuck up.
Okay, so let's try it on [C] the chord pattern.
It'll [C#m] take some getting used to, especially if you've never done a chuck before.
In that case, you know, just play the island strum, try the chuck.
You can still definitely have fun with the song without the chuck.
Okay, so let's try the chord pattern.
A minor, G, C.
[Am] Two, three, four.
Down, chuck up, G, [G]
[C] C.
One more time, [Am] A minor.
[G]
[C] How about one more time for good measure?
[Am] [G] [C]
Okay, so hopefully you can see how these variations make the song a little bit more
interesting than just playing the island strum the entire time.
However, [N] you can just jam out and play the island strum the entire time and still have
a lot of fun playing the song.
So take it at the pace that you need and just enjoy it.

Here comes the sun, doo doo doo [C] doo.
Here comes [A] the sun and I [G] say it's alright.
[Am] [G] [G] Little darling, it's [C] been a long cold [D] lonely winter.
