I'll play y'all a song I wrote about my granddaddy Linden.
[C] This is my mom's dad.
I was born and raised in northeast Alabama in Jacksonville
and we were about 20 minutes from the Talladega super [C#] speedway.
We got any NASCAR fans in here tonight?
Right on, huh?
There's always a couple of y'all.
[F#] My granddaddy was a big NASCAR fan when I was growing up
and I can remember going over to his house as a [C#] kid
and he would say,
now son, what's going on here?
Is that black number three car goes around the track
real fast and the rest of them just try to catch him.
And I got to thinking about him [E] getting Alzheimer's
and starting to [F#] forget certain things.
And I just [N] always knew he would always remember
who drove what car, what number it was
and who the sponsor was.
So I wrote a song about it.
It's called Numbers on the [F#] Cars.
[G#]
[F#] He stopped by [G#] that house on Nesbitt Lake.
[C#]
[F#] He's sitting in [G#] his easy chair
watching a Sunday evening [F#] race.
Tells me my grandma's [C#] in the other room.
[F#] Guess he forgot we [G#] laid her down.
It'll be a year [F#] come June.
And he mumbles about Vietnam.
[G#] He don't know who the hell I [A#m] am but the drivers.
Well he tells [F#] me who they are.
[A#m] He still knows the numbers [C#] on the cars.
Try to get [G#] him out like we used to.
[C#]
But now I load the truck [G#] and I drive the boat
cause there ain't much he can [F#] do.
Cast him a line [G#] and watched it as it sank.
[C#] Thinking [F#] how he used to talk [G#] for hours
now he just stares [C#] at the bank.
He used to know every stop in this fishing hole.
[G#] Now he probably thinks that we're in [A#m] Mexico
but he knows his way around [F#] that boat.
Even [C#] in the dark.
[A#m] And he still knows the [G#] numbers [C#] on the cars.
[F#] Well no he ain't all there [G#]
but I don't care.
My mind's still full of memories [F#] of him.
And he may not know [G#] all the words to the songs
[A#] but he still knows Merle Haggard's [F#] voice when he hears it.
[G#]
Stop by that house on Nesbitt Lake
[C#]
with a [G#] couple of tickets to go see a Sunday [C#] evening race.
We watched those cars [G#] fly around the track.
[F#]
I said [G#] Lord if just one more time
you bring my [C#] old friend back.
[F#] Somewhere around lap 23 [G#] that old man turned
and smiled at me for a moment.
[A#m]
I know he [C#] knows where we are.
[F#] He still knows the numbers.
[D#m] He still knows the numbers.
