[Em] I really did feel like I told some people, I wrote a book a few years ago and I truly could.
[N] I got drafted into the military in 1969 and wound up in Columbia, South Carolina at Fort Jackson for a substantial amount of my tour of duty there.
And I was introduced to a fellow named Snuffy Jenkins.
And he's the [Gm] guy who actually was the first one to put [D] on three finger picks and play [N] in this style.
There were two other guys there from Rutherford County, North Carolina who had done it.
They had seen a classical banjo player by the name of Red Van [E] Ips who played with all his digits [Gbm] on his right hand.
And he used to travel to some of the old ball building minstrel shows and travel down through [N] them.
Well, Smith Hammett and Rex Brooks saw him and they each come up with a style of playing a syncopated thing which they put four notes to.
[G] It gave them
[D] a [G] syncopated role that they could play their Sally [Bm] Goodman's and Cripple's.
And [Em] Snuffy heard those guys play.
But Snuffy was the first fellow that ever put on finger [N] picks.
Snuffy was the first fellow to ever play banjo in the three finger style that was a full time professional entertainer.
That was one distinction he made.
He never did anything in his life [Em] except music until they washed out [N] of it in the 50s and he started selling cars and a Chevrolet.
He was the first person to play it on [Gb] the radio and he was the first person to record it.
[Bb] And Earl grew up about 20 [E] miles from those guys.
But Earl never heard any of them.
He [Ab] went upstairs in his attic and [Bb] worked out the role.
And [Ebm] I [Gm] got some property out in front of Williams Marina [E] on Collateral Lake.
[G]
[C] But anyhow, [Em] this is Snuffy Jenkins' last favorite [G] banjo tune, right?
