[G#] [C#] Some time ago I was sipping on some [D#] coffee and having [F#] some ham and biscuits, when a motion caught my eye through the [G#] truck stop window.
It was a little lost puppy, [C#] half starved and shaken from fear.
[C] Well, I [C#] just had to make friends with him.
So [D#m] I picked him up and put [F#] him in the cab, and buddy he took to that [D#] truck like he was born [G#] that.
Well, I named [F#] him Little Joe, and as I [C#] watched him sleep on the seat beside me, [G#] that's when I knew the Little [C#] Joe would be with me for a long, long [D#] time.
[F#] Well, a few months later I was talking to my old friend Teddy [G#] Bear on the old CB and not paying much attention to my back door.
[C#] And Little Joe started barking up a storm.
I looked up and I saw a smoky in the mirror, and I slowed [D#] my rig down [F#] just in time.
But [D#] you know something, Teddy Bear heard Little [G#] Joe barking and he said, Hey Big Red, let me [F#] talk to your partner.
And I said, [G#] You got it, [C#] good buddy.
How's the old smoky situation, Little Joe?
And Little Joe said, Ruff!
[D#] Aw, that [F#] just tore him up.
And the next 200 miles just flew by.
[G#] Of course, everybody on that CB wanted to talk to Little Joe.
[C#] Well, one night we were headed to the smokies in East Tennessee.
And Little Joe started [D#] acting real [F#] nervous.
I heard [D#] the sounds of lightning on the old CB, [G#] and suddenly we [F#] were in the worst storm that I'd ever seen.
[C#] All at once I saw headlights coming straight at my rig.
Someone was blinded in the rain.
[D#] So I swerved fast [F#] and just barely missed a camper full of kids.
But the shoulder [G#] gave way and we crashed over the side of the mountain.
And [C#] when I woke up, my truck was on fire and I couldn't move.
But somehow, Little Joe grabbed me by the [F] collar [F#] and pulled me away from that burning rig.
[D#]
Well, [G#] I was in the hospital the next time I woke [F#] up.
And the doctor was there [C#] to break the bad news.
The accident had [A#] taken my sight.
[C#] Oh, God, now I can't even [D#] drive.
[F#] And that's when I realized how helpless Teddy [G#] Bear must have felt before the miracle happened that made him walk [C#] again.
And then I thought, well, now, [A#] where's Little Joe?
[C#] Ain't nobody said anything about Little Joe?
Where's Little Joe?
[D#] Oh, [F#] I was so sad [D#] because I figured Little Joe had [G#] given his life to save me.
[F#]
Well, [C#] my brother asked me to come live with him.
And when he opened the door to my new room, I heard an old CB just a-blaring away.
[D#] Well, I couldn't [F#] wait to grab that mic and the first voice I heard was my old buddy Teddy Bear, [G#] ratchet-jawing in the distance.
So I broke for him and he [C#] came right back to me.
Why, it was almost like old times again.
Teddy Bear was a-yacking away, [D#] unloading all the latest [F#] news on me and getting louder and [D#] louder.
But all of a sudden [G#] the sound of an engine seemed to drown [F#] Teddy Bear out.
And I said, [C#] hey, what's going on?
Teddy Bear said, open your [C] front door, good buddy, [C#] I'm just outside.
Lord, the roar [D#] of engines seemed to [F#] rock the house.
And all around me I could hear familiar voices and slamming [G#] doors.
Oh, I couldn't hold back the tears.
All my [C#] friends were there.
And then I heard something I couldn't believe.
Little Joe?
That bark?
[D#] Why, it [F#] had to be Little Joe.
And no [D#] sooner than that he was all over me.
[G#] And I put my arms around [F#] my old partner and the [C#] tears were streaming down my face.
And then I felt something strange.
Little Joe hadn't worn a collar [D#] before.
And [C#] attached to the collar was a handle.
[F#] A hush fell over my [G#] friends.
And I realized, Lord, [C#] my new eyes were standing at my feet.
Little Joe.
