Here is the tape I promised.
First of all, I hope you're having a grand time, all of you.
I wish I could be with you, but then
I plan to do the same thing next year.
Not as extensively as you, but to the Far East at any rate.
As I said in my letter, please let me hear from you in the shape of [D#] tapes or little notes.
I'll pass [C#] the news on to the appropriate [D] quarters, be it Bob Shelton or Sing Out.
[D#] Anyway, you're in touch with Harold.
[E] But [C#] some additional things can't hurt.
And everybody I meet is very anxious to know how you're getting [D] on.
So Joanie, she sends her love.
So does Bobby Dylan.
So does Freddie [C] Hellermann, whom I spoke to [D] yesterday.
I'm in Los Angeles at the moment, but going [C#] back and forth to [B] the East and to Hawaii next weekend.
[D] This tape that you have before you is a
weird in the technical sense.
[D#] There are two [D] marvelous songs on it.
[G] But it was [F] done by myself on an [E] unfamiliar tape recorder
[C#] very, very late at night when Bobby was in the mood to do the song.
So there are all sorts of extraneous noises, which you'll have to forgive.
[D#] But I think I thought the songs were so good that Pete might want to perform them [C#] on the [G#] road.
At least one of them.
[E]
Should you want the words to these songs that is in written down form,
I've asked Alice to get to Bobby, who's back East [D#] now, and get them.
You know, it's tough.
He usually types up, as you know, one sheet and that's it.
[D]
The [E] rest of it you have to [D] glean from tapes and the various times when [F] he sings.
[E] And I think it's fairly clear.
It can be reconstructed from the tapes.
However, [D#] let me know and I'll try to get the [D] sheets to you as well.
[D#] I'll sign off now, so I don't [C#] go into the recorded portion of this tape.
[N] Be well, Pete and Toshi
and Danny and Mika and Tinya
et al.
Have a nice trip.
[G] [B]
[Am] [G] [Em] [C]
[G]
[Bm] And [C] the hurricane
[G] began the hour that the [D] ship comes in
[Bm] and the sea will spread and [Am] the ships will [G] hit
[Bm] and the sands on [Am] the shoreline will be [G] shaking
and the tide will [Bm] sound and the [Am] waves [G] will pound
and the morning will be [D] [D] [G]
breaking.
For the fishes [A] will laugh as they swim out [G] of the path
[Bm] and the [C] seagulls, they'll be [G] smiling
and the rocks [B] on the sand [Am] will proudly [G] stand
the hour [D] that the ship [G] comes in
and the [Bm] words they use to get the ship confused
[F#] will not be understood [G] as they're spoken
for the chains [Bm] of the sea will [Am] have busted in [G] the night
and be buried on the bottom [D] of the ocean.
I'd scare myself.
Yes, sir.
For a song will [C#] lift as the mainsail shifts
[Em] and the boat [C] drifts [G] onto the shoreline
and the sun will respect [Am] every face [G] on the deck.
The hour that [D] the ship [G] comes in
and [B] the sands will [C] roll out a carpet [G] of gold
for [Em] your weary [C] toes to be [G] touching
and the ship's [C#] wise men will remind you once [G] again
that the whole wide [D] world is [G] watching.
All the foes [Bm] will rise [Am] with the sleep still [G] in their eyes
[Em] and they'll jerk from [C] their beds and [G] think they're dreaming
but they'll pinch themselves [C#] and squeal and [Am] they'll know that it's [G] for real.
The hour that [D] the ship [G] comes in
[B] and they'll raise their hands saying we'll [G] meet all your [Em] demands,
but we'll shout from the bow [G] your days are numbered
and like [F#] Pharaoh's [Am] tribe, they'll be drowned [G] in a tide
and like Goliath, they'll [D] be conquered.
