I'm gonna play a song called the girl from the hiring fair which I wrote originally for Fairport
It's touch-and-go whether [E] they recorded it actually, but they changed their minds and recorded and I think it's been a repertoire
Ever since 1986 so I still think this is one of the new songs, but anyway
Here is the girl from the hiring fair.

[Em] I went down [C] to the hiring [G] fair for the [D] summer labor
[Em] I noticed the maid [C] in the very next [G] row and I [Bm] hope she'd be [C] my neighbor
[G] Imagine that [D] my delight when [Em] the farmer picked us [C] both
[D] [G] I spoke not a word [C] on the cart to the farm
But my heart beat in [Em] my throat
[C]
[Em] My lodging was dry [C] my last affair
[G]
I gave him [D] full measure
[E] But my envy grew [C] like the corn in the [G] field for his house was [C] my treasure
And [G]
I'd watch her [D] carry water
[E] Or drive cars from [C] the buyer [D] [G] and the heat from the Sun made [C] the corn grow strong
and with it my
[Em] desire
[C] I
Would [Em] see her in [C] my dreaming [G] and in my dreams [D] caress
[Em] Her eyes her lips her [C] dark brown hair the [F#] curves [C] beneath her dress
[G] But the harvest time [D] it came at last [Em] and so heavy was [C] the task
[D] But [G] the women and the men [C] walked side by side
And I had a year [Em] at last I
[C]
[Em] Swung harder [C] with my sigh a few [G] words between us [D] passed
[Em] And I cursed my tongue [C]-tied youthfulness
[G] And I hope she'd hear [C] my heart
when [G] all was safely [D] gathered and
[Em] We sat down [C] to rest

[Bm] my trembling [C] fingers
And she placed them on [Em] the breast

Then she [Em] turned to me [C] as the Sun went [G] down on all my senses [D]
