Mark Ronson
We're feeling very festive, are we not?
It's a week away till Christmas and you are here
to do what you do best which is sing and play
musical instruments which we like
Thank you for having us, it's good to see you again
It's good to see you again because there's so much to discuss
a lot has happened since we last saw each other
Miley, last time I saw you
I was in your incredible home
in Malibu, it was a home full of love
full of colour
and unfortunately it is no more
How are you feeling?
I'm happy to see you, I'm happy that you got to experience
it's such a magical place
it's why I wrote the song about it
how much freedom is there
I think especially being outside
of the city and just being able
to take that fresh breath of air
[B] and now not having that
because actually a lot of
our community has just, even the people that
didn't lose their houses, just started being able to go back
to Malibu because the air
has been so bad from all the smoke
and all the fires up north and so everyone's now
I think people that still have their homes are getting
back into Malibu and doing everything they can to restore
it and the people like us that lost their homes
I think all of us
have a really kind of
it's an experience that
I can't really explain because it's something that
all of us I think experience
loss of life and we lose people
that we love and we lose relationships
but not many people go through this experience
and so I think just the bond
that it's created between me and my community
and really getting to feel active in that
and getting to feel more like a neighbour
with the people that live next door to me
because we're all going through something really similar
and I was saying earlier to Mark, sometimes it's hard
to find people that can relate to us because we live
such a different life and now
having this community that I relate to more than ever
I actually feel like I've
grown a lot personally so it's been
kind of a blessing in disguise in a way
Well thank you anyway for
bringing us into your home and you made us feel
very welcome and Mark, welcome back
to your home, your second home in the UK
Yes, the studio is almost like
my second [Fm] home, we've been here a lot of times
He's loved here
I'm more comfortable in studios anyway
How does it feel to be back in the UK because I know you're
living in sunny LA now
Have you missed the rain and the cold?
I'm not a big fan of the sunshine
I miss the rain a lot so it's nice
[F] to be back here [E] and to be back here
new record and it's fun
Well yeah, you two are having a wonderful time together
It seems like you found a sort of platonic
Johnny and June in each other
Yeah, that's cool
I'm not in but I don't know what Johnny and June is
Johnny Cash and June Carter
Oh of course, thank you
You know what I mean, it [N] seems like
you two have found this lovely
kinship, especially in this record
How did it first come together?
Well I think
Mark has this long story that he's
made up about how I never texted him back
but it's not real
It's called The Truth
Let's hear The Truth
He can tell his version then I'll tell mine
Dolly has a song called There's Two Sides to Every Story
You tell yours then I'll tell mine
Side number one
I saw Miley singing on TV about four years ago
and just became obsessed with her voice
and trying to work and I got her number
through a slightly illegal means
and I started texting her
That's the first part I don't know what it even means
I think you were cc'd
or something on something that I wasn't
We saw each other on the Raya app on Tinder
Yeah and I guess the thing is
I kind of said hey if you ever
want to work and maybe
she would write back every couple weeks
and I was like you know I'm not going to stalk this person
but I still kind of kept going and then
four years later I had this
idea for the chorus of the song Nothing Breaks Like
A Heart and I sent it to her as a sort of
Hail Mary and she wrote back
right away and was like yeah I'm down to do it
so it was like the exact
perfect time if we got [F#] together any earlier
it wouldn't have been this song it would have been something else
it probably wouldn't have been this special so [N] I'm very
grateful for the fact that how it worked out
And I say that I've always been
a huge Mark Ronson fan and would have never done that
Tim because I would have loved to work with him but
I do believe that everything happens in its right time
and this song has been so special and I
I think what Mark does so
well is take classic songs and make
them feel really renewed and make
them feel more modern and that's what I've always wanted to do
with country music and so I feel like
I've gotten to use a lot of my kind of roots
and kind of make this song more authentically country
and then he's gotten to make it where
it still fits right on the radio and it can
be kind of a pop song
which is something that I would love to be able to
blend those worlds.
You've absolutely achieved that
because remember the first time I heard it I thought I actually haven't heard
anything like this before.
Yeah and I
always you know I feel this way about
genres and genders and everything where it feels like
I just never want to conform or be known
as one thing and I think
this gave me a lot of freedom not only
for this record but for my next record
of kind of setting myself up of what the next album
will sound like and knowing how people
kind of how do they relate
to this style of music and I think people do so.
Absolutely and look the sentiment of the song I think
can be taken in so many ways because it doesn't seem like
it's just about you know romantic heartbreak
especially with the video.
Yeah.
Like do you want to talk about that because
Yeah I think it's important for
pop music to be politically
charged because we have
one of the biggest platforms and
the most I think impressionable
ears watching us and
eyes watching and we just
everything that we say and do
get so much attention and so what are you going to do with that
attention what are you going to do with that platform and I think
to make this song stand out
this isn't just about a relationship even though
it can be if that's how you relate.
I've had so many of my
friends that have been going through different relationship
things they connect to it in one way
people that feel really discouraged politically
they feel it in another way
and I think just being able to
you know kind of talk about what's breaking
our hearts really as like a
society and as a whole and I think that is
you know loss of lives
[D#]
judgment, criticism and hypocrisy
and we were just able to put
all [D] those references into the video while
also I think keeping it again
fun and entertaining for people and
people have really found all those kind of hidden
gems which [F#] has been cool.
For sure I mean you can see it in the
video you can hear it as well there's a
little fire.
Yeah.
There's a ferocity
in how your vocals produce I mean
checking out videos on your Instagram
Miley Vinger 1 take wonder
Yes she is.
I mean how was that just in those
initial days in the studio like laying the song down
I actually remember like when she first went in
cause it was really the first time we met
when she came to the studio and we worked at Shangala
which is Rick Rubin's studio which actually
happens to be in Malibu as well so
we were just talking for like three hours and
then she kind of was like
oh should I maybe go in and actually sing this song
like that's why I'm here right and she went in and it was just like
the first time she sung the chorus
I just remember thinking in my head like
I don't know what I did in a previous life I get [F] this
lucky to like record like some
of the most amazing voices of [B] like
anybody alive in my [E] generation and
just the way she sings on the song then she wrote
the verses that night and the whole
thing yeah it really was a little bit
surreal and it was like
what I had hoped it would be and more
And I have to ask how's the practice coming along with that
guitar part cause I [N] know you were
documenting your struggle.
Oh it's
I mean my hands are full enough but it's worth it
Basically Tommy Brannick is
this incredible guitar player who's played on every [G] record
I've worked on since Amy Back to Black
and he did all the Charles Bradley
and he when we write these songs
he comes up with the best guitar parts ever and
I end up looking like this G cause I end up
going out and getting [F] to play them for like a year and looking
like I did it but [E] I have to shout out Tommy Brannick
but I spent half of my time like trying to
learn his parts so I can [D#] be here
I reckon you're gonna get it.
Okay.
We're gonna be all good.

How does it feel to be back in the UK because I know you're
living in sunny LA now
Have you missed the rain and the cold?
I'm not a big fan of the sunshine
I miss the rain a lot so it's nice
[F] to be back here [E] and to be back here
new record and it's fun
Well yeah, you two are having a wonderful time together
It seems like you found a sort of platonic
Johnny and June in each other
Yeah, that's cool
I'm not in but I don't know what Johnny and June is
Johnny Cash and June Carter
Oh of course, thank you
You know what I mean, it [N] seems like
you two have found this lovely
_ kinship, especially in this record
How did it first come together?
_ _ Well I think
Mark has this long story that he's
made up about how I never texted him back
but it's not real
It's called The Truth
_ Let's hear The Truth
He can tell his version then I'll tell mine
Dolly has a song called There's Two Sides to Every Story
You tell yours then I'll tell mine
Side number one
I saw Miley singing on TV about four years ago
and just became obsessed with her voice
and trying to work and I got her number
through a slightly illegal means
and I started texting her
That's the first part I don't know what it even means _
I think you were cc'd
or something on something that I wasn't
We saw each other on the Raya app on Tinder
_ Yeah and I guess the thing is
I kind of said hey if you ever
want to work and maybe
she would write back every couple weeks
and I was like you know I'm not going to stalk this person
but I still kind of kept going and then
four years later I had this
idea for the chorus of the song Nothing Breaks Like
A Heart and I sent it to her as a sort of
Hail Mary and she wrote back
right away and was like yeah I'm down to do it
so it was like the exact
perfect time if we got [F#] together any earlier
it wouldn't have been this song it would have been something else
it probably wouldn't have been this special so [N] I'm very
grateful for the fact that how it worked out
And I say that I've always been
a huge Mark Ronson fan and would have never done that
Tim because I would have loved to work with him but
I do believe that everything happens in its right time
and this song has been so special and I
I think what Mark does so
well is take classic songs and make
them feel really renewed and make
them feel more modern and that's what I've always wanted to do
with country music and so I feel like
I've gotten to use a lot of my kind of roots
and kind of make this song more authentically country
and then he's gotten to make it where
it still fits right on the radio and it can
be kind of a pop song
which is something that I would love to be able to
blend those worlds.
You've absolutely achieved that
because remember the first time I heard it I thought I actually haven't heard
anything like this before.
Yeah and I
always you know I feel this way about
genres and genders and everything where it feels like
I just never want to conform or be known
as one thing and I think
_ this gave me a lot of freedom not only
for this record but for my next record
of kind of setting myself up of what the next album
will sound like and knowing how people
kind of how do they relate
to this style of music and I think people do so.
Absolutely and look the sentiment of the song I think
can be taken in so many ways because it doesn't seem like
it's just about you know romantic heartbreak
especially with the video.
Yeah.
Like do you want to talk about that because
Yeah I think it's important for
pop music to be politically
charged because we have
one of the biggest platforms and
the most I think impressionable
ears watching us and
eyes watching and we just
everything that we say and do
get so much attention and so what are you going to do with that
attention what are you going to do with that platform and I think
to make this song stand out
this isn't just about a relationship even though
it can be if that's how you relate.
I've had so many of my
friends that have been going through different relationship
things they connect to it in one way
people that feel really discouraged politically
they feel it in another way
and I think just being able to
you know kind of talk about what's breaking
our hearts really as like a
society and as a whole and I think that is
you know loss of lives
_ [D#]
judgment, criticism and hypocrisy
and we were just able to put
all [D] those references into the video while
also I think keeping it again
fun and entertaining for people and
people have really found all those kind of hidden
gems which [F#] has been cool.
For sure I mean you can see it in the
video you can hear it as well there's a
little fire.
Yeah.
There's a ferocity
in how your vocals produce I mean
checking out videos on your Instagram
Miley Vinger 1 take wonder
Yes she is.
I mean how was that just in those
initial days in the studio like laying the song down
I actually remember like when she first went in
cause it was really the first time we met
when she came to the studio and we worked at Shangala
which is Rick Rubin's studio which actually
happens to be in Malibu as well so
we were just talking for like three hours and
_ then she kind of was like
oh should I maybe go in and actually sing this song
like that's why I'm here right and she went in and it was just like
the first time she sung the chorus
