Start Jamming...
You look good.
I like your hat.
Thank you.
Come on in and have a seat.
So what's going on with you these [N] days?
It's like you've been out on the road forever, haven't you?
I am so on the road, I'm like the white line going down the median strip.
With no breaks in it either, no passing.
Uh-oh, no passing.
How's it going?
I think basically since the last time I saw you, off and on.
That's a long time.
And most recently with the jazz explosion, George Duke, George Howard, Jonathan Butler, Will Downing and myself.
[Gb] That's got to be a lot of fun.
Oh, it was a blast.
Do you like being out on the road?
Uh
There are certain aspects of it that are just really grueling.
[Eb]
But when you hear one, two, three, four, you know, and counting off the tune, it's like, okay, this is why we're here and this is why we are going on two hours sleep and chicken wing between 17 people.
That's tight.
I don't think I want to go on the road with you.
When there's no time, there's no time, you know.
And if somebody comes through there with food, they're in trouble.
We're going to hook you up.
We're going to get Patty LaBelle to feed you.
Patty can cook.
Patty's supposed to cook for all of BET.
I'm sure she'll have no problem including your entourage.
I'll catch a train down here or fly from wherever I am.
I'll be here.
It wouldn't take much.
We figure a breast probably feeds you.
I'll come with my napkin stuck down in my car.
But it is, you know, people don't really
All they see is when you hit stage and that looks like that's great.
That's a lot of fun, I'm sure.
But that's 45 minutes out of [F] your day.
The rest of the day when you're on the road in strange cities, I would imagine that that gets to be a bit much at times.
Yeah, yeah.
Because for instance, with the Jazz Explosion, it's like a two, two and a half hour show.
And during that time, everyone is on stage almost the entire time because it's not like, well, I go out and do my thing and then, you know, George Howard comes out and does his thing.
We are all out there together.
I'm singing background for Will Downing and Jonathan Butler and they're singing background stuff for me.
That's cool.
So we're out there the whole time.
And then after we do the [Gb] hit, you have just enough time to go back to the hotel.
Of course, you got meet and greets after the performance.
Then you go back to the hotel, pack up your stuff, get on the bus and ride for like 12 hours.
And you get into the next state, the next city, and you have just enough [Eb] time to check into the hotel, drop your stuff and run the sound check.
And after sound check, it's time to do the hit, like maybe half hour because nine times out of ten, it usually runs behind.
So if you can like snatch a banana or something in between there, you're lucky, you know, because after sound check, you do your makeup, hair, you know, pressing, steaming, you know, rolling out your clothes and stuff.
And then you hit the stage.
Afterwards, the whole cycle starts all over again.
[Em] We're going to have to campaign to get some of your [Ebm] fans to bring you all [D] something to eat.
So far, you just had a chicken wing and a banana.
You can't survive on that.
Actually, I can't.
Actually, I haven't had anything today.
There's no way I can keep up with that schedule.
That would just drive me [N] nuts.
It's grueling.
And over the last, I would say, couple of months, my brother has gotten me on this weight training program, which has really increased my stamina and endurance.
And I don't know how I would be able to continue the schedule without it.
You know, you wouldn't think that lifting weights would do that, but it does.
Yeah, it's helped a great deal.
Are you married?
No.
Do you have anyone special in your life, I mean, that this keeps you away from?
Yes and no, depending on what the gig is.
But fortunately, when I'm with my band, he's a drummer in my band.
So it's cool because we can be on the road together.
But in situations where I'm out doing promotion or festivals or something like that without my band, it makes it kind of tough because you get used to being on the road with your partner.
When I introduced you, I was saying that there's a pocket of people that just love you.
There are a lot of people that really aren't up on Rochelle Ferrell yet, which in a way is kind of cool to me.
I'm curious to know how you look at it, though, because it's kind of like a swell growing.
Yeah.
I sometimes think that that's better than coming out with a big bang.
It seems like it can last longer.
Yeah.
You know, it's like a slow build, which is the natural evolution of an artist in the first [Eb] place.
You know, you don't know when just ends up being that artist.
Boom.
[Gb] You know how they say, let down.
That's not how it happens.
It's a constant evolution into where you are by [Bb] the time you hit your maximum audience.
[E] And you're going to perform for us in the second hour, right?
Yeah.
All right.
I'm looking forward to that.
[Em] I'm looking forward to hearing Elle, too.
Yeah.
Oh, yeah.
It's going to be nice.
We got Elle DeBarge also performing in the second hour of the show.
Rochelle, thanks for coming by.
I [Bb] appreciate it.
It's good to be here.
I'm home.
All [G] right.
[A]
Again, Rochelle and [Fm] Elle DeBarge performing live in the second hour of Video Soul.
