Hi guys, Dave here with a new riff [Eb] for you to try out.
[A] Today we're going to look at It's Only Love by [F] Brian Adams and Tina Turner.
One of my [Gb] favourite riffs, got [A] some great chord voicings in it, some nice cut [Gb]-offs [G] and
a little sliding lick in between.
Ok guys, I [Gb] hope you enjoy this one, now let's have a close-up.
[F] [G] Ok, first chord is a D5 with an A in the bass.
I'm holding [Ab] down the 3rd fret on the B, [F] 2nd on the G and then the [E] open D and A strings together.
[Ab] I'm also going to mute [A] off the other strings, so the back of the 3rd [Gb] finger [F] is going to
[Gb] choke off [E] the open 1st string and I use my [F] thumb to choke off the open [C] 6th string.
That way I can hit all the strings, only [Gb] here, the chord that I [D] need to.
Like that.
Ok, that's the first chord [A] and then it's followed by a rest on beat 2, or the first [D] half of beat 2.
Like that, just put the palm on the strings to cut it off.
[Eb] [C] Then we change to a Csus2, keep the 3rd finger on the [Gm] B string, play the open G and we're
playing the 3rd fret on the A.
[Ab] Again, we're going to allow the back of the fingers to
choke off the other [C] strings.
Then cut that [G] off on beat 4.
[C] Then we're going to play [Ab] an Asus4, so [F] keeping the 3rd finger on the B [G] string again and then
I'm going to [Gb] barre across frets 2 [F] on the [E] G and D strings and we're [D] playing the open A.
So you'll notice the first 3 chords [B] have this 3rd fret on all the way through [D] [C]
[A] and after
the [F] Asus4, cut that one off as [Ab] well.
Then we're going to play [Bb] a Bb5, [F] that's 1st fret on the [D] A, 3rd on the [E] D, 3rd on the [Bb] G.
Then we get this little slide, [D] slide from [Fm] 3 to 5 on the A string, [D] then play [F] 3 on the
D, then we're going to play [Ab] the open D and A strings [D] together.
Then [Fm] we're going to get a little kind of a muted up strum.
[F] Basically what's happening [A] is he's going to move to the next [E] chord but he's not quite
holding it down yet [G] and you end up with a [E] little muted up strum.
So the next chord [Eb] is going to be an F5.
It's going to look like a normal barred F.
So [Ab] you barre across [E] all 6 strings on the 1st fret, then you're going to [G] hold down [F] the 3rd
fret on the A, [E] 3rd on the D.
[Db] [G] Normally you would hold down the 2nd fret on the G [Cm] string but what we're going to do
[B] is not hold it down, we're just going to mute it [Gb] off by using the [Ab] 2nd finger.
[F]
If you do that, you end up with a very [G] wide sounding F5 power [F] chord, which is [A] what it's doing.
[Em] [B] The way he plays the [G] chord, he goes down, [F] then up, [G] cuts off the chord, [A] does a muted
up [F] strum [Ab] and then 2 [F] downs.
[G] [Dm] [G] He does that [Db] sequence [F] twice.
[G] I should also mention that once he's played it, he's cutting it off again.
A big part of the [E] whole riff actually is [F] cutting off [Eb] these chords in between.
[G] [F] That's the riff.
[D] [C]
[A] [Bb] [Dm]
[F]
[Bb] Sound wise, he's got a crunch guitar [Gb] sound with a little bit of chorus and reverb on it.
[A] I'm using a Pod HD400 for this [Gb] and I've got it set on a Fender [F] Deluxe amp [Ab] model.
It's slightly overdriven.
I've got [G] a Tube Screamer in front of it as well just to give it a little extra drive.
[D] I've got an analog [F] chorus on it and a plate [A] reverb to [F] give it that sort of sound.
That's basically the sound he's got.
[A] Slightly overdriven, lightly chorused [Gbm] and [Bb] reverbed.
[E] [Db] Something else I think about with this riff, why it works so well, is [G] that the first 3
chords have got this common note [D] in them.
They've got [Bm] this high [D] D.
[C] [Am] The first 3 chords have [F] got that and I think it [Bm] acts to glue the whole thing together.
It's a [D] nice little touch.
[C] [A] [B]
You get similar ideas in [Gb] songs like Wonderful by Oasis.
[B] Really nice.
You've got the little [F] slide and then that nice [Ab] choppy [F] rhythm that he's got.
[Db] [G] Getting back to that, [A] another [Ab] nice thing I like about [A] this is you've got those cut-offs
in between the [Db] chords so it really makes it sound punchy.
[D]
[C] [D] [Bb]
[F]
[B] Also, because [A] it's not hugely overdriven, it's [G] much [A] easier to get those nice, [Ab] clear,
[F] crisp cut-offs in between [A] the chords.
[C] There you go.
Anyway, [E] I hope you enjoyed the lesson and I'll see you for one real [D] soon.
