[N] Hi guys, Dave here with a new riff lesson for you.
Today we're going to look at Join Pain by the group Maze.
I've just started listening to their stuff a lot more recently.
I bought the greatest hits and I'm really, really getting into it.
It's great stuff.
Okay, right on with the lesson.
Harmony wise, we've just got an E minor [D] 9 for the first bar.
Chord wise that would be [G] 7th fret on [Bm] the B, G, [G] 5th fret on the D, [C]
and 7th fret on the [Bm] A.
You hear that classic minor 9 sound.
[Bb] Okay, that's the entire [N] first bar.
And then you also use this for the first two beats of bar [G] 2.
[A] Then it switches to this.
[Dbm]
I tend to view this as a B11 chord.
Other people would [B] describe it as an A slash G chord, A over G.
Which is basically an A [A] major chord with a B in the bass.
[Gb] Those notes are, you've got the 5th fret on the [Db] B, 6th [A] on the G, 7th on the D, and 7th on the A.
And you just allow the backs of the fingers to mute off the other two strings.
So that's just on beats 3 and 4 of bar 2.
[Bbm]
Okay, that's the actual [Bm] chords that are underneath.
The actual riff is [A]
[N] this.
Beat 1, the first half is a rest.
And then [A] we have, [B] we're just [N] hammering on from 7 to 9 on [A] the D.
[B]
[Bm] Then on beat 2, we have 7th fret on the D, [Gb] down up.
[B] And then 9 and 7 [F] [Bb] on the D.
Again, [Bm] down up.
[A] [Bm] [A]
Right, [B] beat [Eb] 3, we do this.
7th fret on the G, [D] down.
[N]
And then we're going to relax the finger, a little kind of dead note we're going to get.
Pick down again, press the [D] note up, and do an up.
So you kind of go [G] down, up, down.
[N]
And then on beat 4, and again it's on the second half of beat 4, we get a little half [A] beat rest.
[B] We get a [D] little hammer on again, [A] 7 to 9 on the D.
[B] So the first bar, [A] [Bm]
[N] that's the way it's spaced out.
Okay, second bar, we just have 2 on the 7th fret of the G [D] again.
[B] And let's play [Am] very staccato, [D] so you can play each note, [G] relax your [Eb] finger.
Like that, both with [Bm] downbeats.
[E] [B] Then on beat 2, [A]
7 to 9 on [G] the G, down up.
And then 7 to 7 on the [A] D.
Again, just down up, [Em] down up.
[Am] Then the last 2 beats, [Gm] there's a space.
So the whole thing, [Em] [A] [D] [B]
[A] [Cm] [Bm]
[A] [N] that's the entire riff.
That's the majority of the song as well.
There is a little middle section where there's a chord change.
But for the actual guitar part, that's it.
So I hope you enjoyed this lesson, and I'll see you for one [Bm] real soon.
