Riff 3 is one of the heavier etudes in melodic editions and this is a good technique focus
for on and off technique as I like to call it whereby we're striking the chord or the
string and then we're palm muting and then we're taking off again.
So for [A] example when we play the A5 you'll notice [F] then we're coming down for palm [Eb] muting
so [A] followed
[Bb] [A] [Bb] by that pull off technique at the end there from the first fret to the open string.
[A]
So you might want to practice this very slowly just this first bar and [Abm] you can turn that
into a [A] sequence.
[Bb] Other things to note are the picked and pulled off sequence towards the end of the first line.
[Am] [Bb]
[A] It's a good exercise for pull off technique on the fifth [Bb] string picking [A] and pulling the [Bb] open [Am] string.
[Bb] Also to note there is just to make sure when you're doing the pull off, [A] [Ab] when I do it anyway,
[Bb] after I've pulled off the first thing is wrapped across strings 1 to 4 [A] just to prevent unwanted noises.
In the latter half of the etude there's a nice idea on the sixth [E] string and
[G]
[Ab] [G] [E]
[G] [E]
of particular
importance there is the bend, the half step bend from the third fret which works and then releases [Ab] itself.
[G] [E]
[G] Be careful not to release too early because then you'll lose the rhythm.
[Ab] [G]
If we were to pick both notes [Ab]
[G] that's the rhythm.
[Ab] [G] [E]
[Ab] [G] But I like to do a bit of a bend there, kind of reminds me of Alice in Chains.
[Ab] [G] [E]
And that's the way the etude ends, [G]
[Ab] just with a half step bend and then you should [G] kill
that by using right hand to dampen down.
