Hi I'm Paul from the Studio Rats.
In this video we're going to be looking at creating a blues tone
using the Positive Grid Spark 40 amplifier and what we're also going to do is to play along with
a backing track, a blues backing track that comes with the Spark app.
[Gb]
[Eb] [E] So what we're going to do
first of all let's create the tone and we're going to create two tones with this or basically we're
going to create one tone but then have some features inside that tone to take it from a rhythm
tone to a lead tone.
So what I'm going to do like I always do with these [Ab] videos is to start from the
basic patches that you get with the amp.
Now there's four buttons on top of the amplifier and those
four buttons [E] represent four different patches and we're going to choose the crunch tone.
So straight
out the box it sounds like this.
[G]
Now it's a really good tone straight out the box but I think we can
do a few things just to make it a little bit more blues orientated.
So let's go into the actual [Gm] sound
and start changing the parameters.
So what I'm going to do first of all let's bring back the
gain a little bit, turn up the treble and the volume.
[A] [G]
Now as this is going to be the [Gb] rhythm tone I don't want
any extra gain going into the front amp driving the front of the amp.
So we're going to go to
compressor we're just going to turn that off for the moment we will be using [Fm] it when we come to
the lead tone but just for the rhythm tone we're going to turn that off and it sounds like this.
[A]
[E] [C] [A]
[E] The next thing we're going to do is turn the noise gate off.
Now we don't want the noise gate choking
and cutting off [C] any of the input going into the front of the amp so just take that off.
Now the
amp sounds like this.
Now in hindsight after taking off the compressor I think we could do with a little
bit more gain.
Let's turn that up to 4.4.
[Cm]
[C] Now the next thing I want to do is to change the reverb.
So let's go into the reverb double tap on the reverb and we're going to choose the holy grail
which is a hall medium and it sounds like this and [Cm]
[C] it's a bit of a darker fatter reverb.
Now let's
change some of the parameters.
All I want to do is just to bring the level back just a little bit.
Let's bring it back to 5.5. Sounds like this.
[Cm]
So what we're going to do is to play along with the
backing track.
I'm actually going to be recording the backing track with the guitar so I can then
create some lead parts over the top.
So what we need to do is to click on the note icon there
and I'm going to go over to blues.
Now that creates this track so let's play the track.
[C]
[F] [D] [F]
[G] [C]
[G] [Cm]
[C]
[Eb] So now I've played along with that track I've actually recorded the backing track with my rhythm
playing over the top.
So let's go back into the tone and change that so it's more of a lead sound
and then I'm going to record a lead part.
So let's go back into the tone by clicking on the amp icon
there.
Now let's add some extra ambience by using the delay.
Now as I keep saying I don't really
like this digital delay so let's double click on that and let's change it to the vintage delay which
is like an analog style delay.
Let's bring back the intensity so that sounds like this.
[C] [F] [Cm]
[E] Let's bring
back the echo a bit just to reduce the repeat.
Right now let's add some extra drive going into
the front of the amp.
Let's click on drive double tap on that and we're going to add the booster.
So let's turn up the drive on the booster and then we get something like this.
[Bb] [G]
[Cm] [C]
So that's on the neck
[G] pickup if I switch it to the bridge pickup.
[Eb] [C]
[E] So now we've got a bit more drive to add to the front end
of that amp so it's driving it a little bit harder for the lead sound.
Right let's click on the comp
and let's turn that on and now it sounds like this.
[Cm]
[C] [Cm] [E]
As you can hear now we're starting to get some noise
back so let's go back to the gate.
Let's just switch that on.
Now I find that this gate works better
at lower settings it doesn't cut off and choke any of the notes.
Now what we're going to do is to play
along with the backing track and the rhythm guitar that we recorded and play some lead parts over the top.
[Cm] [C]
[F] [C]
[Eb] [Cm]
[F] [Cm] [C]
