[F] This land is your land, [G] this land is my land.
From California to the New York Islands.
This is [F] a lesson [C] on playing chords.
[G] Play them on your cigar [C] box guitar.
[D#] Alright, hey guys, it's Shane Spiel.
This is a beginner lesson.
This is going to get you started on playing simple chords on your cigar box guitar.
You're going to need a three string cigar box [G] guitar.
And it can be slide, it can [F#] be fretted.
I'm using a slide cigar box guitar.
In fact, this is the Shane Spiel Macanudo.
As of this filming, I have a bunch of these on sale over at StubbySlide.com.
[F] Just a straight up Depression Era cigar box guitar.
[D#] This is tuned to an open G.
Which is [G] G, D, G.
G, D, G.
[F] Open G.
It's not a major chord, it's not a minor chord.
It's called a dyad.
The technical term is dyad.
[E] Cigar box guitarists don't care about technical terms.
It's a [G] power chord.
Okay?
So it's G, D, G.
Which no [F] matter where you put your slide is another power chord.
[G]
And [D#] it's neither minor or major.
It's just a straight chord.
A [F] G, [G] [E] A, B, [C] C, D, E, [G] F, G.
[N] And how do I know what those chord names are?
Well, that's another part of this lesson.
I actually put them on
Let me see, the light's getting out of it.
I put them on the neck.
We're going to show you all this.
And tell you why this [G] helps for playing chords.
Well, [F] let me ask you something.
As you were trying to play regular guitar, [F#] if you were trying to play regular guitar,
did you ever [D#] go online and download music that had the chords on there?
Here's This Land Is Your Land.
And as you see, it's got the F chord, the C chord, the G chord, so on and so forth.
Well, those types of songs can be played on a cigar box guitar.
What you're going to want to do is get a piece of masking tape.
And you're going to want to place it on the side of the neck of your cigar box guitar.
And you want to go behind the nut a little bit, so you can write a note right there under the nut.
When you start with the open, it goes G.
Let me bring that down.
Then you've got A flat, A, B flat, B, [N] C, C sharp, D, E flat, E, F, F sharp, and then G,
which is one octave from the low G to the high G.
That's where your 12th fret is.
Get a Sharpie and you write these notes.
But write them directly, especially if you're playing slide.
Write them directly underneath the fret marker.
Don't write it in between.
You want to write it directly underneath the fret marker.
Why?
Because when you're playing slide, that slide goes directly over top of the fret marker.
So suppose you needed to play a [F#] B chord.
I'm going to turn this around and do a little yoga trying to get in there.
Right there.
The slide is directly over the fret where the B is, and there's a B [B] chord.
Which means if I strum it, there's a B chord.
[N] Now here's how you play chords and play along to your favorite songs that you download on the internet.
What I usually do is I go to Google and I type in,
This Land is Your Land Chords PDF.
When you type in chords and PDF, [F#] as separate words, in your search,
it usually comes up if somebody has uploaded a free PDF of that song.
You can just click on it, download it, and print it.
So I did it with This Land is Your Land.
I'm looking here.
I'm going to put this up on the screen.
I'm going to do it right there.
I'm going to put the lesson right there.
As you can see, it starts out with an F chord.
Now these chords are strange because you see F slash C.
Anytime you have two chords above one word, always take the first one and throw the other one away.
Just how I do it.
Just get rid of the second one.
Don't worry about what that's for.
Okay, This Land is Your Land.
Notice it starts at F.
So I'm going to look on my little guide here and go to F right [F] here.
Which is actually the 10th fret, [G] but being that we've got tape and sharpie, who cares what number fret [F] it is.
[F#] So it says, This Land is [F] Your [F] Land.
And there's F.
And [C] then the next chord, This Land is [C] My Land.
And you strum that chord right over where the word is.
So This [F] Land is Your Land.
This Land is My Land.
And then [F#] from California it says G.
[N] Well, I look here.
G is right on the [D] nut, which means
Just play the strings open.
From [Gm] California to the [C] New York Islands, there's a C.
From the Redwood [F] Forest, F.
[G] To the Gulf Stream, [C] waters, C.
This Land was made for you and me.
[N] So what you're doing is you're downloading any song and then just using your chord chart here on the side of your neck.
And just to strum those chords.
This isn't a lesson about me showing you picking hand or anything like that.
It is simply, you place the slide [F] over this chord and you strum.
[D] It's a very beginner style of [D#] playing, but it's going to get you playing.
[Em] That's all [F] this lesson is.
It's that simple.
[N] You're getting your favorite songs off the internet.
Hopefully they are there.
If not, you can buy chord guitar books.
And just use this little guide on your three string cigar box guitar tuned to G.
And now you can start playing the rhythm parts to all these songs.
No, you're not playing the leads.
You're not playing what they sing.
Like in This Land is Your Land.
[F] This land is your land.
This land is [D] my land.
I'm not playing
[D] [Em] [Gm]
[N] No.
This is just playing the chords in the background.
You're not playing the lead.
You're not playing the melody.
You're just playing
This [F] land is your land.
This [C] land is my land.
In [G] California, in the New [G] York Island.
Da da da [F] da da da.
Da da da da da da.
This land is made for [C] you and me.
[N] So there you go.
It's a great way for you beginners to get going.
I want you to be able to play these things as soon as you build them.
So there you go.
The chords on the side.

_ _ [N] So what you're doing is you're downloading any song and then just using your chord chart here on the side of your neck.
[F] _ This land is your land.
This land is [D] my land.
I'm not playing_ _ _ _
[D] _ _ [Em] _ _ [Gm] _ _ _ _
_ [N] No.
This is just playing the chords in the background.
You're not playing the lead.
You're not playing the melody.
You're just playing_
This [F] land is your land.
This [C] land is my land.
In [G] California, in the New [G] York Island.
Da da da [F] da da da.
Da da da da da da.
This land is made for [C] you and me.
[N] So there you go.
It's a great way for you beginners to get going.
I want you to be able to play these things as soon as you build them.
So there you go.
The chords on the side.
