Hey [Abm] guys, how's it going?
Brennan here.
I've gotten a few requests lately to make a tutorial for a Frank Ocean song, so today
we'll be learning how to play Pink and White.
This song is a great practice for [Em] beginners because it makes use of some non-standard
chords you don't often [G] see.
If you want to play along with the album, all you have to do is make sure that your
[Abm] guitar is in standard tuning.
Alright, let's take a look at the intro.
The intro is made up of notes taken from three different chords.
Now I personally find it easier to play the intro without a pick, but you should definitely
try it both ways to find the method that works best for you.
Alright, the first step is making a [G] C major 7 chord.
To do this, we put our index finger on the 7th fret of the high E, [Em] middle finger on the
8th fret of the B, ring finger on the 9th fret of the G, [E] and that's really all we need
for now, but if you want you can also put your thumb on the 8th fret of the [C] low E, and
your pinky on the [Ab] 10th fret of the D [Am] string.
Alright, [A] now that we have our [B] fingers in place, we'll start by playing the high E,
then the [G] B, and [E] finally the G.
[C] If you had your thumb covering the 8th fret of the low E, you could play it along with
the first note like this.
Using your thumb is completely [Em] optional here, but it does add another dimension to the [N] sound.
After we play the first three notes, we move our fingers to form a B minor 7 chord.
We'll lift up every finger except for our index, and slide it down to the 5th fret.
Then we put our ring finger on the 7th fret of the B, and middle finger on the 7th fret
of the G.
And just like the other chord, you can choose to also put your thumb on the 7th fret of
the low [B] E.
[Em] Now that our fingers are in place, we play the three finished strings starting with the
[D] high E, then back to the B, and finish up with the G.
Here it is one more time.
[Bm] [B]
This is everything we have so far, starting with the C [C] major 7.
[Bm]
The next step is to make an [G] A major 7 [E] chord, which is basically an A [Am] minor chord that's
four frets up the fretboard.
[A]
So we put our index on the 1st fret of the B, [E]
middle finger on the 6th fret of the D
string, and ring finger on the 6th fret [Db] of the G.
[A]
[Em] We're going to finish the intro by playing this [Am] chord 12 times.
[E] It doesn't really matter which way you strum it, as long as the rhythm [A] is 1 and a 2 and
a 3 and a 4 and a.
Here's [Abm] the entire intro [C] from the beginning.
[A] [Bm]
[A]
[Em]
The next part of the song is the verse.
We'll be using the same three chords for this section.
[Am] A C major 7, B minor 7, [D]
and an A major [A] 7.
Each chord will be strummed [E] the same way.
So that's [Am] going to be down, up, up, down, up, up.
[A]
[D] One and a two and a.
With the lyrics, it should probably sound [Am] something like this.
That's the [Em] way every day [D] goes, every time we have no control.
[A] The sky is pink and white, if the ground is black and yellow.
I'd say the most challenging part of the [Ab] song is probably going to be the chord changes.
[Em] In particular, I think changing from A [A] major 7 back to C major [B] [Am] 7 might be a little bit tricky.
The best [F] advice I can give you [Abm] for this is to keep your ring finger on the G and reposition
your [Gb]
fingers while sliding your ring finger up three [Am] frets.
[E] It might take a little bit of time to get used to, but I know you'll get it eventually.
Alright, that's [G] about it.
Hope you guys enjoyed this [F] lesson.
