Okay, today I'm going to shed some light on the right hand picking technique for the left
still and the dobro and I want to go over some practices with you.
First we're going to cover the alternating picking technique and that's whether it be
the thumb pick and the first finger such as this.
[E]
Playing one note with your thumb and one note with your pick, make a practice session of
doing that on one string and then trade the thumb pick for the second finger or the middle
finger and do the same thing until you get comfortable and you can do that real smooth.
Start off slow and gradually work your speed [Em] up.
[B]
[Em] Change strings,
[B] change fingers
[Em]
[A] and [Eb]
then work on [A] the frets.
[G]
[Abm] [Gb]
[Em] Maybe work [A] on your scale work like [Db]
alternate the [Bm] finger.
[Gb]
[A] With every note you alternate the finger and make a practice of doing that.
[Ab] [Bm]
[D] [E] [A] [B]
[Ab] [B]
[Ab]
[E] [Db]
[B] [A] [Em]
Okay, now I want you to, if you would, I want you to practice a little bit of that every
day to get your fingers to where you develop a muscle memory and you can alternate picks smooth.
And [Ab]
now the next part of what I want to share with you is a forward roll and a backward roll.
Now a forward roll is with your, you start off with your thumb pick and you play on three
strings like strings one, two and three but you pick the first note with your thumb, [B] second
note with your first finger and the third note with [E] your middle finger.
So that's a forward roll.
[A]
[D]
[A]
[E]
[Db]
[A]
[B] Now the next thing we're going to discuss is a backward roll [Em] and that's where you start
with your middle finger, [B]
you play the next note down with your first finger and then
the third note you play with your [E] thumb pick [A] and those notes sound.
[Db] [D]
[A]
[D]
[E]
A prime example of the forward roll would be the lesson that we studied in the steel
guitar rag where the part [Gm] goes, [E]
or actually that's a [Cm] backward roll.
[E]
[G] [E]
[D] [E]
[B]
[G] [E]
[C] [A]
[Eb]
[E] [B] [Eb]
[E] Okay.
So now we got the alternating picking to work on with both fingers, we've got the forward
roll, we've got the backward roll.
I want to work on those picking techniques until you can get smooth enough to go across
the strings with [B]
[E]
[Ab] your alternating picking.
[B]
[E]
You change fingers and [B] [E]
[Ab] [B]
[E]
then start working on the forward roll, change string groupings
[Abm] [E]
and then the backward roll.
If you work on these picking techniques a little bit every day you'll soon be developed
or you'll develop muscle memory and it'll just help your overall picking.
Thank you very much.
