[Eb] Jesus Christ my living
Hey guys Phil Wickham here can I talk through a little bit of how I play the song living hope
So I tune my guitar down almost all the time.
I tune it down a half step
So don't get confused if you play an E and it sounds different than mine.
I'm down a half step
So when I play E, it's actually E flat [F] don't let that confuse you though because it's all the same shape still
So I'll [Eb] just talk as if we're in E
[Bb] So I play this song in E shapes
And the first thing I'd like to show you is how I play an E chord to make it really easy to hit all the
Other chords so that you don't have to look at your fingers the whole time, you know, this is hard to learn
I remember my dad he's a guitar player
He showed me this way to play an E and [C] it was so hard at first
But after I practice it for a little bit, it made it so much easier to play in this in this key
So, you know how this is a [Eb] normal either.
I think a lot of people learn right here
[G] But instead on the on this third string instead of having your pointer finger on [Bb] here bar these two strings
So the same two right there you bar them with your pointer [Gb] and reach out your pinky on the third string
to hit that fourth fret third string [Ebm] and so
Get really nice ring out of an E.
But see what happens when you can play E
B
[Eb] C sharp minor a
G sharp minor or G sharp e over G sharp and so you it's all right there
He you ever G sharp a B C sharp
So I don't even have to think about anymore
And once you guys if you don't know those shapes once you practice them a little bit, it's so handy
and so living hope
You just need to know those like five chords I showed you how great the chasm
E that lay between the B.
All you do is add that [Bb] note
And a
[Eb]
Just holding down these two strings [Ab] letting that a [Eb] string ring out
Mountain and C sharp is just adding that C sharp bass.
So you had a I add a C sharp
Mountain I [Bb] could not climb
in desperation
I turned to
And spoke [Eb] your name
[Bb] into the [Ebm] night
Still all the same [Eb] course is a little bit different placement
[Ebm] your loving kindness
So [Eb] through the [Bb] shadows of my soul
The work is finished
The end is [Eb] written Jesus [Bb] Christ my living hope you're all kind of hanging there the whole time.
The course is right there, too
And so I love these shapes for the verse but sometimes what I do
between a chorus and a bridge or a bridge in a verse or verse in a chorus is I'll change where I'm playing the shapes
On the neck or I'll change kind of the shapes just to kind of give a variation
Which you don't have to do it all but if you have that much mind power between looking at chords and leading and all that
Then so I might go instead of hitting an [Eb] a like this
Yeah, I'll hit the a like this, you know normal kind of a to
Yeah
[Bb] [Cm]
[Eb] So it's kind of more traditional E chords which kind of just
Almost can't tell it's different.
But there if you if you listen to recording you'll notice it's different
[Bb] [Cm]
[Eb] Till [Bb] I lost [Cm] it's grip on me [Eb] you have broken every chain
[Bb] [Cm] And that course was almost it [Bb] was all the same four [Ab] chords until the very end it changes a little bit [Eb] Jesus Christ
[Bb] my
[Eb] All the other verses are the same [Ab] yeah, but if you don't know [Eb] the shapes get to know them they're super helpful
