My idea was to make an old record, [A#] not make a new [A#m] record.
[C#]
I've always wanted to do an [A#] album cover, you know.
[G#] And I'd always loved Motown.
[C]
[C#] That was my life.
[A#m] That was how I grew up.
[D#]
[A#]
[D#]
[G#] [A#] I really enjoyed the demo [B] process, you know, doing it [F#m] all at home.
[A] I mean, every record I've done has really been my demos,
and then people [F#m] brought in very, very carefully,
searched at the door for any ideas.
And if they come up with any ideas, they're sent home, you know.
I just, this is what I want, OK.
[A#] I don't want that, [A] I want this.
[C]
[Bm] I just plunged straight in and asked Bob Babbitt
if the Funk [F#] Brothers would [B] do it.
[Am] He said that they would love to do it.
[G] We are so happy to be here, and to keep the name [D#] going for all the Funk Brothers.
[D#]
[C#] [G] [D#]
[G]
[C#] [D#]
[C#] [D#m] [D#]
[C#] [G] [D#]
I didn't actually know if I could play anymore.
[N] We just did a trial session here one day,
and the first thing I hit, a stick flew out of my hand,
because I lost all strength in my left hand.
I had to gaffer the stick to my hand.
So I had this Dr Strangelove kind of thing,
where I'd be walking around with a stick taped to my hand.
All right, well, let's do a few goes of this.
So I've had the operations now.
I've had one on my neck, and one on my elbow, and one on my palm.
And still I can't feel a f***ing thing.
But they tell me in time it'll get better.
I didn't want to bring anything new to these [E] songs.
[F#] I wanted it [C] to sound the way it did, and the way, to me, it should [C#] sound.
[Bm] [C#m]
[F#m]
[Bm] [C#m] Heatwave has always been [F#m] to me the one song,
[Bm] if you had to [C#m] characterize Motown, [D] would be that.
[E]
[F#m]
I mean, the sun just comes out when you [C#] hear it.
[Bm] [C#m]
[F#m]
[G] You know, I never dreamt anything.
I never dreamt I'd better make a living playing the drums, let alone anything else.
And then something happened and it all changed.
[C]
I found myself getting very emotional singing it.
I don't know why, I [C] think it's the lyrics.
With [G]
my mum's
It's just you start thinking about [Em] childhood.
So it's [Bm] one of my favourite songs.
and
every [Em]
day to leave
My magic [G] has died
[D] And I can play hide [C] and seek with [G] my feet
It is full circle for me.
[C] I've made a record with the people who've made the records.
There are countless [G] my years
Really, it's the knot, if you like, at the end of the rope,
you know, that ties the beginning to the [C] end.
But you don't know
I'm [G] going back
The most enjoyable record I've ever made.
I'm going back
Wouldn't have missed it for the world.
I'm going back
