[C] [Dm] [C]
[Dm] [C]
[A]
[C] [Dm] [C] Is there [Dm]
[C] [A] anything different about Smile?
I would say it's because there's [C] the inclusion of [D] vocals on there.
On the last two albums there were no vocals and I thought, you know, it'd be nice to have
some vocals on this new album.
And I had this song that was kicking around for a long time called [C] Smile.
And the only problem with this song was that I was singing it.
And it [Dm] just didn't sound that good.
[C] And one day I had an epiphany.
I thought, wow, I've been touring a whole lot with Mindy Abe and she has a [E] beautiful voice.
[Dm] I think she would be great on this song.
[C] [Dm] Smile is the shortest [D] distance between two people.
[C] [Em]
[A] My friend DC, who's a wonderful studio engineer [G] and producer, has actually worked on the last
three albums with me.
[C] He comes up with ideas that I never would have thought of.
[G] And that's why I like working with him.
[E] I'll come up with the melodies [E]
and the harmonies and he'll come up [Bm] with the salt and pepper
and the paprika, [A] the spice.
[C] [D] A lot of the original compositions on my album [B] start with a musical motif [G] that is not the guitar.
And [G] sometimes it'll be a long time [D] before I even [E] think of the melody [C] or even put them,
record the melody on the [Am] song.
I want to feel that the song is almost complete, that the bed is [Am] almost complete there [D] before
I start playing the guitar.
[Bm]
[Am] [A] [C] [G]
[D] [E] I was [D#] very heavily influenced by the Mason Williams [Dm] song, Classical [Gm] Gats, when I was a teenager.
The fingerstyle guitar [Dm] was just [A#] very exciting for [D#] me.
[Dm] When I wrote [A#] Don Quixote's Final Quest, I think I was [D] probably being influenced by [Bm] that song.
[G] [G] [F#] [B]
[D] [F#]
[Bm] [D] [A] [D]
[E]
Here's [G] a song that [B] starts out to be a classical guitar and ends up with [A] almost a full [D] orchestra in it.
[F#] I almost left it off the album, [Bm]
but we worked [A] on it a lot and [F#m] I started to think, [F#] you know,
this is [Bm]
something a little different that people [A] might like to hear.
[D] It probably ended up [G] being my favorite song on the album.
[G#] [F#m] [G]
[B] [B] I have a lot of good friends who [F#] are also fantastic musicians, [C#] and so it was very [A] natural
for me to ask them to [B] play with me on my new album.
Mindy Hebert, who [C#m] I must have done easily over a hundred [A] shows with over the years.
Ute Groove [G] and Rick Braun
[F#m] both have [G] little features on my [F#]
album, and [F#m] I've been touring
with [G] both of them this whole year, actually, [C#] the show called [F#m] Jazz Attack.
I [Bm] do a Christmas [E] tour every year, and I have done [Bm] for the last, what, 11 or 12 [E] years, and
it [Bm] features Rick [C#m] Braun and Mindy Hebert, so I [G#m] think it will [F#m] be, yeah, a [Bm] shoe-in that I'll
be able to do [E] some songs from the album that feature Rick [C#m] and Mindy.
Wow, [F#m] it's been four decades [B] since I started as a professional [E] musician.
I've had some [C#m] kind of a charmed life to be able to [F#m] play the music that I want to play.
[Bm] I think that's the dream of [F#] any musician.
I've been very, very [C#m] lucky.
