I'm moving the left hand and half it.

Now, a lot [N] of drummers, a lot of my drum heroes, play by moving the left hand in this manner.
I'll do this on really fast tempos, but otherwise, this is a technique I haven't really quite mastered.
The art of playing Brushes DVD that Steve Smith put together with Adam Nussbaum, with
a number of great drum masters, including Billy Hart and Joe Morello.
Apologies for any names I don't mention.
But anyway, all these gentlemen show the way that they play, and most of them do this kind of thing.
So, I encourage you to check that out.
But anyway, this is the way I play it.
As you get faster, the right hand's not moving around in a circle anymore.
It's pretty much busy.
It's got its hands full just playing the right.
I do it, this is kind of a dumb way to do it, to be honest.
The right hand's doing all the work.
When it gets really, really fast, a lot of drummers will split the beat up, or the pattern,
between the two hands.
Generally, I just play real fast with the right hand.
It's a lot of work.
When you're, whether you're playing it at fast or medium or slow tempos with the brushes,
there's an interesting thing about playing with the brushes.
Generally, I've found with my own playing and with my students that the brushes sound
faster than you think, if that makes any sense.
So, I try to keep in mind, or I encourage my students to widen out the beat a little
bit when you're playing, when you're improvising or playing fills or whatever.
The point is not to play them as fast as you can.

A lot of other great places to check out here at the Vic First website.
And I do have to take a moment and stop and thank Vic and all the great people at the
for sharing so much of this educational material and wealth.
Lots of great performances, educational things.
It's what the internet should be all about.
So, thanks for coming here and thanks for [A] listening.
Good music to you.
