There's not only an audience out there, but it's a growing audience as we realize this world has to
stick together and music is one of the best ways to learn this.
A beautiful melody will leap
language barriers or
religious barriers or political barriers.
Yes, a beautiful melody will will help tie this world together and sometimes
extraordinary words will.
I didn't realize when I
improvised a melody to a short poem in the Old Testament that these
few words would be some of the most important words I
ever would latch on to.
To [Eb] everything
[Gm] turn, [C] turn, [Bb] turn.
There is a season.
[Eb] Turn, turn, [Cm] turn.
[F] And a time to every purpose [Bb] under heaven.
It's a Greek [Ab] style of [Bb] poetry [Fm] and [Bb] so
they know almost [Fm] exactly when these words were [Bb] written.
A man named, his [Fm] Hebrew name was Kahalath.
When the Bible was translated, they called him Ecclesiastes, which means [Eb] teacher in Greek.
[Bb]
[F] But [Eb] he said
it's a [Cm] time to be born, a [F] time to die.
Time to plant, a time to reap.
[Bb]
Time to kill, a time to heal.
Time to love, a time to hate.
And
all I did was improvise a melody to it.
But [Abm] I found myself singing this [E] more and more.
It explains why it was that
tens of thousands of years ago, if you weren't a good killer, you didn't live.
In fact, you and I would not be here if our ancestors had not been good killers.
The ones who were not good killers didn't have descendants.
Now, in this [G] present time, when [N] foolish scientists have made it possible for
to wipe each other off the face of the earth,
now we've got to look for a different part of our tradition.
The part which was developed when our ancestors
learned probably how to build a council fire.
And they sat around in a circle and
made life and death decisions.
Do we stay here and starve or
risk moving into somebody else's hunting territory and have to fight for our life?
Do we expel somebody for doing something absolutely [Bb] immoral?
You know, among the [Eb] American Indians, to tell [Bb] a [Eb] lie is like [Bb] as bad as committing a [Eb] murder.
[Bb] If you [Cm] say something, it must be true.
[F]
[Bb] So they had to [Ab] make life and death decisions [Bb] around a council fire.
And this
talking [Fm] is what we have to do in [F] the world now.
[Bb] Even though we may disagree with each other, we feel like shouting at [Fm] each other.
We have [Bb] to lower our voice and try, [Eb] how can we say what [Abm] needs to be said without [F] making them so angry they [Bb] will walk out?
