[E]
Hi, [Em]
[E] [Am] [Em]
[D] [G] [Am]
[Bb] my name is Yonis Spiegelman.
I'm [B] a bass teacher here in Lesson Place.
And today I'm going to teach you about a very important scale, the minor pentatonic scale.
So the minor pentatonic scale has five notes.
It [Eb] is very important for you to get familiar with [B] because once you get the scale down,
you can master a lot of different genres and be proficient with a lot of different songs
that you want to learn how to play.
Okay, [E] so I can introduce you right now to those notes.
So we start with the [A] one, and then we go to [C] the flat third.
We [D] have the four, [E] five, [G] flat seven, [A] and one.
Okay, I'm going to repeat that one more time.
So we have the one, [C] flat three, [D] four,
[E] five, [G] flat seven, [A] and one.
Now, what's really [G] cool about this is you can take this form that I'm showing you right
now and you can move it all around the bass.
So you can go here down to G and do the same [Bb] thing.
[D]
[G] [F] [C]
[G] Basically, do everything [D] you want.
[F]
[C] [A] [G]
[D] [Ab] Okay, so now that I've showed you how to play the scale, I'm going to show you three genres
that you can use it with.
[B] So we're going to start with the rock genre.
What you can see about rock is that I mainly base it on the eighth notes.
So I have this lovely rhythm section.
All lesson phase features right here with you.
We have Asher and we have Nathan.
And we're going to play together.
I'm going to demonstrate how I take nothing but the scale, and I'm just going to make
a bass line out of it for this rock tune that we're going to play to you guys.
Okay, ready?
One, two, [E] three, [D] four, [C] [A] five, six, seven, eight.
[G] [A]
[C] [A]
[Em] [A]
[G] All right.
So this is how we play [B] rock with this pentatonic scale.
And something else that we can do with it is we can jam a little bit with [Eb] reggae.
Now what you want to know about reggae is that it has a different subdivision.
We're going to use more the triplets that are the subdivision of this rhythm.
Ready?
One.
[Am]
[E] [D] [C] [D]
[Am] [E] [Am]
[E] [Bm] [A]
[Am]
[E] All [B] right.
And [N] the third bass line I'm going to show you is going to be a funk song.
Okay, one, two.
[A]
[E]
[D] [Em]
[B] This is it.
So if you want to check out a few notes that I wrote, so you can guys play this bass lines as well.
You [D] can go to the lesson phase link right over here and you can check out those [E] bass lines.
And if you want to know a little bit more, you are more than welcome to have a lesson
with me on lesson phase.
