[E] Hi, I'm Matt Munasteri for Peghead Nation.
I'm excited to be able to get a chance to
teach the music of the 1920s and 30s on guitar.
Hot jazz, swing, roots of jazz music on the
guitar, on the acoustic guitar.
And we're going to work our way through music by Nick
Lucas, Eddie Lang, Dick Madonna, Carl Kress, George Van Epps, Lonnie Johnson, and a bunch
of the guys that were making the transition from the banjo to the guitar in the early
days of jazz.
We're going to look at some of the development of rhythm guitar playing
from the kind of syncopation and busy bass notes versus treble of Eddie Lang.

[Cm] [D] [Cm]
[Bb]
[Cm] [Eb] [Bbm]
[Bb] [G]
[Gb] [G] [C]
[F] [Bb] And we're going to work on then the more straight ahead traditional quarter note style of Freddie
Green and Alan Ruse and George Van Epps and a lot of the guys that played for the big
bands in the 1930s, which is really dependent on a very, very straight and even [Em] quarter
notes.
[Am] [G]
[Bm]
[Dm] [Am] [G]
[Em]
[A] [Am]
[G] And then we're going to get into some of the chord melody playing in the 1930s.
This is different than a lot of the jazz playing that you might associate with chord melody
playing like West Montgomery and bigger fuller voicings [Dm]
[Em] sort [C] of thing.
This is mostly taking
its chords on the top three strings or the next three strings in.
There are three and
four note voicings largely dependent on triads.
So we're going to [A] have to learn triads up
and down and up.
[C] And we're going to work on learning some of these melodies.
[B] [B] [Abm]
[C] [A]
[Em] [Gb] [C]
[Em]
[E] [Am]
[G] We're going
to work at learning some of these melodies using that style of playing.
So I'm really [A] looking forward and I hope that we get a chance to explore a lot of music together.
