Wine [A] took over.
He would come [B] wake me up out of my bed and I'd go play piano.
I could play the blues and boogie-woogie at F-shop.
[F] [A] I [G] learned a few songs.
[Gbm] Musicians that were [Abm] road [Gbm]
musicians, they would come in from New [Am] York and Chicago.

[Abm] I settled in Lubbock, Texas for some reason.
[Gbm]
My father would look after them.
[A]
They showed me some things on the piano.
One thing I regret is the guitar player [E] asked me if I wanted to learn guitar.
I [Gbm] said no for some stupid reason.
But I wanted to play saxophone because they had a lot of [Abm] keys on them.
[A]
You weren't thinking about the money at that time.
I didn't know money was having [B] anything to do with it.
[E] It wasn't about money, [Eb] it was about love and [B] music.
Eventually, [Db] playing in high school, [Ab] [Gbm] my band director, [Db] Roy [Ab] Roberts,
had come [A] in from the Navy, an alto player.
[Ab] He [C] noticed [Dbm] that I was [Ebm] interested.
[Dbm]
[Db] He started me on clarinet [Gbm]
going into [Abm] the sixth grade.
[Gbm]
[Eb] I had played [G] [C]
clarinet, [B] ocarina, [A] and plastic horns.
[G] It seemed a little [C] boring system as a clarinet.
[G] [E] So I kind of excelled at that.
[G]
It went on for a couple of years and then I finally got a saxophone.
He [A] played in the [Gm] combo, jazz combo.
He used to [Gb] take us out to [A] a town like [G] Amarillo and play dances.
[Ebm] He gave us $10 or [C] something.
My mother [Am] [A] and my three sisters [B]
moved to [A] Rochester, New York.
It [Abm] was a bit of a culture shock.
[A] [G] [B] But [Am] we had a family there already.

[A] That's when I met [Ab] Ron Carter [Em] and Chuck [A] Mangione and [Db] Gap.
I started [Gb] playing.
I played with [Db] Ron Carter.
I [A] interviewed Ron a few months ago.
I just [Em] played with Ron [B] on my birthday.

He's a nice man.

You told me about his new book.
He's got a new book.

Why did you move to England actually?

I was living with my wife in London.

I've always wanted [C] to visit London.
[Eb] I've been in and [Bb] out.
[Am] The tour [Gm] ended in London with Bobby Bird and Jimmy.
Bobby Bird, [Am] Maceo, Fred, and myself.
[Gm] We were on the road.
[Gb] The tour finished here.
[Em] I decided to stick around.
[D] I [Gm] stuck around for a while.
I started to work a bit.
I [A] started getting gigs.

I called Maceo.
I said, [A] come over [Cm] and play some more with me.
[Em] He [Eb] came over.
[B] We tried to get Fred to come [Am] over, but he was [Em] busy doing something else.
[Gm] Anyway, that
[G] [Gm] went on for a little while.

Eventually, [Eb] [F] the J.B. Horns was [Db] formed.
[Am] Not from that incident, [Em] but Maceo was working with James Brown still.
So Fred was living in L.A.
[Cm] I went to visit Fred.

[Em] He said Maceo was coming in, [C] so we went to pick him up [A] at the airport.
[E] On the way from the airport to [Am] Fred's house,
[G] we couldn't stop [Gb] laughing and telling jokes.
[G] I said, we ought to put a band together.
We went to Fred's [A] house and spent [Bb] the rest of [C] the night telling [N] lies.
