Start Jamming...
I started writing these songs at the end of 2016.
It all kind of started with [D#] one single event.
I had a [C#] trip over to London.
I had like this gig, one little gig over in London, a weird gig.
Not even a like, yeah, I'm looking [D] forward to it.
It was kind of like, OK, I'll go do this gig in London.
And so you [C#] get there early so you [B] can actually
sing when you get to the next [D#] location.
[C#m] So I try, when I fly [F#] over the ocean [A] and go to Europe,
I try to stay [B] awake all [A#] the time.
[C] [C#]
Drink coffee all day long.
Europe, the [A#] coffee's pretty good there.
And [D#] I get to about 7 PM.
[B] And I'll be like, 4.30 or 5.
But I get to the PM part of the day.
And take a sleeping pill.
15 hours.
And then you're in the day Europeans.
That's [D#] been [D] my plan that I find works for me.
Everybody gets it.
So [E] I was in the middle of one of these [D] big, long, jet lagged sleeping [C#] concepts.
And I had a dream, a very vivid [B] dream,
in the middle of this night [G] [D] of Billie Holiday.
And I had [E] [D#] always been an admirer,
but [C#] never been in [G] the songs of Billie Holiday.
[C#] And I realized [C] that that [B] voice is so sad.
[D#] [A#] Sad, sad voice.
And you've got to be a grown up to be with that voice.
[E] But in this dream, she's really young.
And she was so pretty.
[F#] And she was smiling straight at me.
[N] And she turned, and she was singing to this audience.
And there was a bunch of people in a barn.
They were singing to her.
It was really, really [C] beautiful.
[B] I woke right up out of the dream.
And I started downloading [A#m] Billie Holiday like crazy
on my [D#] iPhone.
And I started listening [D] to her.
And I think more than musically, you know,
literal musical [A#] influence.
And I just love this [B] record called Let It Sing nowadays.
And [D#] her voice, she didn't [A] waste one single note.
And you got it.
[C#] [D]
And also, her voice got so much [C#] more melody too, so fast.
You never go low.
She's going to carry you right down there.
Believe me.
She's going to go with you to [G] the
[C#] world.
And she's sure to give to you.
And so then I was thinking about Billie Holiday
being sad, why [B] she was sad.
And there's some [C#] very clearly [Bm] obvious reasons
why she might [C#] have been really sad, being born
when she was born and who she was.
But I also had heard that she was separated out
from her mother when she was really young.
Spent some time not [N] really getting
cared for by her [D] mom.
And as did Peter Piloff.
So, [C#] you know, second [D] words.
And so I [N] started thinking about actually those two.
And I love it.
I love it.
[E]
Guess you're never [A] going to come back for [E] me, ma.
[A] Suitcase [Em] of pretty dresses.
[B] [E]
All I'm feeling was for me, ma.
[Am] Perfume for [E] the ladies.
[B]
[E] Was a cherry salad [A] dog.
I [E] wish you was.
[A]
[E] [B]
[Am]
Under [E] the [A] trophy.
We sing [E] along together.
Play the [B] sweetest sound.
[A]
[E]
[B] Maybe you are [C#m] losing right.
[A]
[E] Shh.
[Bm] [B]
[C#m] After all the night.
[E] All I know is.
[A]
[E] Easy.
[A] You had a [B] good reason.
[E]
[A] [E]
[B]
[E] [A]
[E]
[B] Guess [E]
you're [Am] never going to see me [E]
shining.
[A] All the last people wondering [B] around.
[E] World is running.
It's a [F#] microphone in my [A] hand.
Singing to the [E] [B] beat.
Toes to the town.
[E] Sometimes I think I [A] see you out there smiling.
Your pretty [B]
sad eyes.
Singing long.
[E]
[A] [E]
[A] Stealing a [E] voice and a feeling [B] like I'll never come [A] down.
I used to think it might [E] be you.
I used to know [B] maybe you were.
Shh.
[C#m] [A]
[E]
Wait.
[B] Lonely day [C#m] after lonely night.
[E]
All I know [A] you must have had a [E] good reason.
[A] You had a [B] good reason.
[E] [N]
