Start Jamming...
Alright, so, uh, next song has a little [N] story, and I'm gonna present it to you.
Maybe my stories are a little
you know
But, I'm not saying names or pointing fingers or anything.
That's a problem, it's not a finger, so I can get away with that.
But, anyway, but I've never seen you before, so you've never heard the story before, right?
Ah, alright, that's how it works, Patricia May.
Alright.
So anyway, I'll keep it short.
So, it's like this.
37 years we were going at it.
Yeah, that's a long time.
Yeah, that's a long time.
You say me, you say me, and I also have a time.
It's a long time.
During those 37 years, we made a lot of records.
And, uh, and sometimes they worked out really well, sometimes they didn't work out so well.
But when they didn't work out [Ab] so well, it was my fault.
[G] Yeah.
Because as the person kinda in charge in producing and making all the records, that's kinda how it works.
You know, you're like [B] the head coach.
You lose the game, it's your fault.
You win the game, it's the team's fault.
[Ebm] That's kinda how it is.
[N] Cool, I'm happy with all that.
I lived in a studio.
That's all I spent my life.
I loved it.
I'm up every minute of it.
I would stay in there for 12, 14 hours a day.
Patricia would knock on the door and say,
Spider, you ever coming out?
I'd go, no, I'm not coming out.
I'm not coming out until I make some good songs, good records in there.
So I really enjoyed it.
I really did.
It's my favorite thing to do on earth.
It's the best thing ever.
You can create, it's just phenomenal.
So anyway, every once in a while I'd let myself out of the cage.
I called the studio the cage.
And I went out and I made some records for some people that worked out pretty well.
Kenny Lockett, John Williams, Beth Hart, Del Oro, Steven [Gb] Bissett, Stephen Colabreau.
You know, a bunch of people.
[N] And 1982, was it 82?
81.
81, right?
81, 82.
I think we're so old we can't remember shit anymore.
81, 82.
Excuse me, I can remember.
You can remember, I can't remember.
[Bm] So anyway, I received a call.
And we're getting ready.
[N] We finished The Crying, we finished The Precious Time.
Yeah, we finished The Precious Time.
[Db] And we're getting ready to go on the road.
We have 14 days off.
[C] And I received a [G] call from somebody and they said,
Hey Spider, I [Gb] know you're off for 12, 14 days.
You want to come in the studio and do what you do?
Maybe a bunch of racket playing guitars and do all that stuff, have fun?
And I go, yeah, you know, I've got a couple days.
Sure, I'll do that with you.
So this was one of the songs we did.
You may have heard it.
It went [F] like this, yeah.
[Ab] [Eb] [C]
[Eb] Not Jesse, [G] this is Fred.
[F] And it's always been a good friend of mine.
My lazy soul [Cm] is changing [Eb] and harder to find.
Jesse's got [G] something, girl, [Bb] that won't come to mind.
[G]
[N]
That was one of the songs we did and that was Jesse's girl.
And that was Ricky Sprayfield [Gb] who called me up.
[B] Now, here's how it goes.
When you go in the studio with somebody and you make a record
and it goes to number one and wins a Grammy,
you become like really good friends with that person.
I mean, really, really good friends.
So, Ricky and I, we live in the, Jesse and I, and Rick, we all live in the same [N] town.
So, I'm in the studio and I get a call.
It happens like daily, you know.
I'm in the studio before we left.
And the phone rings, I go, hey, hello.
I go, who's this?
Ricky.
I go, hey, what are you doing?
Want to go hang out?
All right, so we go to the place we always have breakfast.
We go [Gm] out there, we have a great time, talk, hang out, have fun.
[F] We walk out, there's like five girls [N] that go, hey, Ricky, Ricky, can we get a picture with you?
And you can include your father, too.
[D]
Ricky's father, what?
How's that?
[G] But here's how it goes now, see.
Now, here's how the [Eb] leg up goes on this now.
Because I told you [A] this story.
And now, what you can do if you ever run into Ricky in the street or anything like that,
you can now tell him, you know the truth, [Eb] who really blamed [N] Jesse's girl.
[G] See that video we [F] played?
I mean, if you want to call her [Eb] up, I'll give you his number.
