[Ab] G'day, Nigel here from Sax School.
Right, today I want to show you how to play One Step Beyond.
Now, this is a classic piece of 80's style saxophone playing.
And, you probably know this song.
If not, check it out.
Madness, great [Db] British band and [Cm] a fantastic, catchy little instrumental tune.
Rightio, it's a good tune to learn because it's quite easy to play actually.
It only uses a few notes and it's also very repetitive.
So, it gives us a good idea of how to play in this style of music and how to get that kind of sound.
So, I'll tell you what, we'll start off by [E] playing it through with the backing track.
I'm going to play it through with the backing [Cm] track for you and then we'll go back and look at it step by step.

[E] Ok, cool, so you can see how it is really repetitive.
There's lots of rhythmical playing in there.
But not many notes actually.
It only uses the notes from one main scale which [N] is called a pentatonic scale.
Pentatonic meaning five note scale.
So, let's look at that first of all.
So, in the tenor saxophone, in the original key, it's in the key of D minor.
So, that means we're going to have some B flat all the way through this piece of music.
But that pentatonic scale that I was telling you that it's based on is using these notes.
So, it's D, F, G, A and C.
[C] [Eb] [Gm]
You [C] put a D at the top again.
[D] Kind of got a Chinese-y sound to it or an oriental [G] sort of sound to it.
But it's a [N] scale that
