[F] On a hill far away [Bb] stood an old [Gm] rugged cross, [C] the emblem of suffering [F] and shame.
[C] [F] And I love that old cross [Bb] where the dearest [Gm] and best [C] for a world of lost sinners [F] was slain.
[C] [Dm] [C]
[F]
[A] [Bb]
In the Bible we read of the beauties of [F] heaven and the place [C] Christ has gone to prepare.
[F] And eyes have not seen [Cm] and ears [Bb] have not heard what awaits us in heaven in that [F] city four square.
[C] We'll walk and talk with our loved [F] ones and [C] we'll see the Savior face to face.
[F] And we'll sing praises to Him forever [Bb] and forever we'll thank Him [Gm] for His amazing grace.
[Eb] [C]
But we must prepare while we live [F] here below so to claim [C] our inheritance that awaits.
[F]
And if we neglect so [Eb] great a salvation [Bb] we can never enter [Gm] heaven's gates.
[C] You know we'll be joint heirs with Christ in that home.
[F] And together we'll [C] walk the streets [Am] with Him [F] made of pure gold.
[Eb] And we'll live in [Bb] a mansion not made by [Gm] human hands and [C] forever watch the mysteries of heaven unfold.
[F]
[C] These [F] words were written by my mother and as of the recording of this album, [Eb] [Bb] which was finished in [Gb] April of 81,
[Gm] she's of sound [C] body and mind and I'm proud to say that she's about to celebrate her [F] 79th birthday.
[C] [F] And with the exception of a few mental scars brought about by her youngest and [Bb] most wayward son, [Gb] [Gm] I believe she's fine.
[C] And I want to dedicate this album to her, which [F] I've titled, For the Mama That [C] Tried.
Mom, [F] this one's for you.
But I also want to dedicate [Eb] it to an old [Bb] friend of mine [Gb] who [G] is the leading character in these recordings [C] and who gave his life for [F] all of us.
[C] I will cherish the old [F] rugged cross [G] [A] till [Bb] my trophies at last I [F] lay down.
I will cling to [A] the old rugged [Bb] cross [F] and exchange it [C] someday for a [F] crown.
