Start Jamming...
[B] Yeah, we're about 90% there.
It's been like a crazy science project, like a [A] Petri dish.
So we've just [D] been really [Dm] picky over what we want to put on this new album [A] and really
want to come up with something completely unique.
[C]
[Dm] Plus we have an endless [Dm] amount of
material to assist to, so it's just been a [D] process, a little different from last time.
We [Dm] want to come up with something original that we've [D] never heard, that's my approach,
something that we've never [Dm] heard before.
Obviously something that [D] we're all happy with and excited
by.
[D] [A] But I mean, in the end, recording an album is really, it's a pretty tough compromise
in a way, because you've got this [Dm] live piece of music and [B] obviously we're always changing
it, hence the time taken writing.
You're constantly finding [D] different parts you can
go down.
So when it comes to recording the album, you're really sort of going, all right,
at this point in time, we're just going to stop and say, that's how it's going to be
recorded in history.
And then you do your best to capture it and [A] squeeze this massive
[D] thing into [D] little digital bits or [Dm] little CDs.
I gotcha. It's challenging.

You're going to release a record in the spring, you're going to release a record in the fall.
[D] That's when you release it, generally speaking.
People release all summer as well, but [F] the
optimum times are optimum times.
It's a very [G] tedious, [D] long process, and they're always
going back over things [C] and questioning what they did and stepping back and going back
farther [Bb] and going forward.
And in a way, it's like [Dm] they're laying a foundation, [B] they're
putting in the footings for a [Bb] house.
So I can't [A] write melodies [Gb] until the footings are
in place.
I can't write words until [F] the melodies are in place.
I can't build walls and [Bb] then
start decorating this place until the [F] foundation is in place, because if they keep changing
the [D] foundation, changing the footings, the melodies [F] change and then the story, of course,
[G] isn't getting written.
So that's where we [C] are.
There's a lot of [D] footings that keep shifting,
lots of awesome footings, but they keep changing, and they keep changing their minds.
So I don't
know if it's a good thing or a bad thing, it's just their process.
And I just check in.
I just go, I come and I see what's going on.
Hey, Justin, send me [A] the track, see where
we're at.
Is this thing done?
If this thing is done, done, done, and I can start [Dm] writing
words and music on it, great.
But I've had instances where I've started to write stuff,
and by the time I actually got it around and back and we're actually listening and
[D] whatever, the song had gone in a completely different direction.
So everything that was
written [Dm] melody-wise or lyric-wise is completely irrelevant now.
I have to start over.
I'll
digest these things as quickly as I can and [A] keep that moment, that freshness of [Dm] what my
impressions are of the finished tracks and we'll start.
But nothing is tracked yet.
Nothing is completely finished.
There's a couple [A] songs that I think are finished now.
I can start [Dm] working on those.
But nothing's actually [D] [Dm] recorded.
They're just all, they're just written.

But my co-host [D] Brandon, he
talked to Justin Chancellor earlier this year, [E] and Justin really made us feel like Tool [F] would
have an album out in like [D] 2018.
Now on a scale of one to ten, how much did Justin lie to us?
[F] To say that the record would be out in 2018?
Yeah.
He did [D] not lie to you.
Oh, he did [Dm] not
lie to us.
So it is.
Now from one to zero, how much do you lie to him?
