Now welcome to Vanderbilt.com this is in response to a request for
New Speedway boogie by the Grateful Dead from their classic 1970s album Working Man's Dead
It'd be a little bit tricky here because you know like most Grateful Dead songs has got Bob Weir playing rhythm in this case
He's playing acoustic rhythm and then Garcia's doing basically everything else
And so what we're gonna look at in this lesson is the Garcia
Electric rhythm and some of the fills that he puts in there so yeah that should get you through most of the song
So it's a lot of fun.
Let's get started
[D]
[E] [D] [E]
[Eb] [A] [Eb]
[E] [B] [D]
[Eb] [E] [Db]
[B]
[E]
[Em]
[D] [A]
[B] You
[G] [D] [A] [B]
[E] [B]
[G] [D] [Am]
[A] [E]
[B]
[A]
Okay this starts off with a little bass run you start with the
[E]
open E string and [C] then
It's open a first fret a
second fret a
[B] in a hammer-on
so
And back [E] down to that open E, and [B]
then you play that [Ab] open E again
And you're gonna pedal between that and the open D string
[E]
Second fret [D] you [N] play that twice like that, and then you go into the rhythm the rhythm is
E7 chords
you're gonna
It's this form of an E7
Which is the same as making a C chord putting your pinky on that G string third fret and you're just gonna [E] take that up
to the fifth fret you get this
It's a really nice chord, and you can include that open E string in there
And you're just gonna go between that and an E flat 7 which is just you know one fret down, so just
[D] That's the basic [E] rhythm
[B] But he varies it kind of every verse with you know a little a few fills and things so just go through them so that's
please don't dominate the rap jack is that bit and then if you have nothing new to say is
[Eb] [E] [E]
And that's just a double stop on the
[Bb]
The D string and the G string [B] on the ninth fret the seventh fret the ninth fret
And he always pulls off on [C] those
Then [E] back to
[G] for
If you please [E] don't back up the track
[Eb] [E] Sorry [Eb]
[E] and then [Em]
[B] and he has this little riff that
So that's just sliding up on the D string
from the seventh fret to the ninth fret
picking up the G string seventh fret and
then
[Eb] sliding up [Bm] and
[Am] [N] then down on the
D string from the [Em] seventh to the third [E] and then back to
The the e7 chord
He's immediately going to this verse where he said our line where he says I spent a little time on the mountain
And he does this sort of little tax man kind of thing in there where he goes
spent a little time on the
So it's
So he's coming out of this [B] it's like
[E] [Eb]
[N] All right, and then it's I spent a little [E] time on the hills same basic
And then heard some say better run away.
It's
So that's just repeating this so it's and then [G] he goes into the
Other say better stance.
Oh, it's a full G a
[F] [D] D
And [Em] an a and you hit [A] it once and then you play this [D] little riff
[A] [N] With a lot of crazy vibrato, which kind of what of course he's into and that's just
the G string [Db] sixth fret
[B] The D string seventh fret and a G string six right again
[A] And [D] then he goes into an [E] alternate version of this rhythm instead of playing these seven
[Gb]
he's playing a full e bar chord on a seventh fret and
[B] Picking up the ring finger to [B] get
But the same rhythm, okay
And then he goes up to the G
[F] The G chord on the on the tenth fret [G] and plays and
then [D] down to the D chord on the fifth fret and
[Gb] Then all the way up to the a [A] on the twelfth fret and does this
Okay, [E]
so that whole bit is just
[G] [D]
[B] Then he goes [Bb] down and does it again with some slight variations
And
[B] [E]
When he gets to the G he [G] only hits it once and
then the D hits it [D] once and
Then when he [Gb] gets up to this a on the twelfth [B] fret he does
[A]
and then he's back [E] to the
