Natalie Merchant and Jennifer Turner Discuss Tigerlily chords
Start Jamming...
My vision was a small band working out songs in a garage.
And I wanted to recapture that innocence and freedom
that I'd felt in the early days with 10,000 Maniacs.
I needed a band, so I called Bear McGuire and Peter Janowitz,
who I'd met on tour.
They were the rhythm section of The Wallflowers.
[F#] And then I found this phenomenal 22-year-old guitarist
named Jennifer Turner.
Oh my God.
[E] What, what, what?
Carnival.
Carnival.
Jeez Louise.
[C#]
[F#] [F] We lived like a family working together at my house.
[B] And over several months, Tiger Lily took shape.
I had no idea that it was a good gig.
I was so young, I'd never done anything.
And so to me it just was what happened.
It's just like, oh yeah, sure, you play on a record
and it sells 8 million copies, you tour around the world
and get a little money, blah, blah.
[G#m] We spent weeks in that [E] rehearsal studio above the garage,
day and night, [B] and we drove the neighbors insane.
[G#m] I don't remember feeling any [E] external pressure
of a big label deal or [B] the solo debut.
[C#] I just remember really [G#m] enjoying making [E] music again.
[B] Climbing over [G#m] the old stone wall [E] and bow for the riverside
When I [F#] go to the river [E] to soothe my mind
[F#] Ponder over the crazy days of [F#] my life
[E] Just sit and watch the river [B]
flow
When we started making [C#m] the record at Bearsville,
[E]
and I made the decision to not work with a producer,
it really felt like it was some kind of after-school club.

And then there were no teachers involved. Right, [C#] right.

[C#] [G#] [A#m]
[C#] [F#] [D#]
[C#] [G#] Doctors had [A#m] come [G#] from distant [F#] cities
Just to see me
[D#]
I [C] remember you were shocked when I said,
and now we'll go on tour, now that the record's out,
and you're like, tour?
No one said anything about a tour.
I was just coming to play a few guitar tracks.
Oh my God!
Do you remember that you convinced me to buy you
a couple gigantic Marshall cabinets?
Yes, yes!
We'd be at soundcheck, and the perennial response was,
how are things on stage now?
They'd be like, no, Jennifer needs to turn down.
I'd just go, Jennifer?
You'd be like, I know.
I used to love when we would come out on stage
and people would look at you,
[Dm] and you didn't look the way that you could play.
laughs
[G]
Oh boy!
[D#] Oh my God, how cool! Wow!
Look how [A] young you were.
Do you remember that guitar?
The Martin.
The Martin.
Yeah.
There's no experience here.
Nope.
[D] In the face of zero experience.
Yep.
But [A] so bright and so
Annoyingly late.
[Dm] So eager.
It's a Saturday night
Look how [A] beautiful!
You look younger than me.
[Bm] You're style, very cool.
It's funny, because I never think of myself
[D] as someone who has any sense of style.
And [A] a fool.
What I found really wonderful about working with you
is you were this raw [F] talent, unknown to the world.
We were able to put this spotlight on you at this moment
when you were just beginning to blossom.
I'm grateful for you and for Tiger Lily.
The fact that you accepted [E] me is really important.
My chaos was not as important as my musicality.
There's something I [A] recognize [D] about the smile
[E] [A] Of the girl that just [D] walked by
[E] She glanced [A] my way and [D] I looked down
[E] And [A] watched her footsteps carry [D] on
[E] Maybe [A] it was my [D] mother and her [E] innocence
[A] Maybe [D] it was my [E] first love [A] and our innocence
[D]
Maybe [E] it was ten [A] years ago, [D] such sweet innocence
[E] Maybe it was [A]
me
[D] Maybe it was [E] me
[A] Maybe it was [D] me
I keep putting [A] it.
I love your voice, Jennifer.
Thanks.
[F#] Nothing is simple [F#] anymore,
[F#m] it's all I ask for
[D] Something I know what it's made of
Something I could love
Something I could really
