Hey everyone!
So today I'm going to be reading some hate comments and I'm going to respond to
each one using the power of bass.
Because believe it or not there are some people who have a serious
problem with the fact that I'm a bassist who plays solos.
Some people believe that since bass has
traditionally been the instrument that plays bass lines and supports the rest of the band,
this is the way it should always be and solos should be forbidden.
So let's start [Fm] reading some
of the comments and [C] we'll see if I can use [Gm] bass to respond to them.
[Am] This fella will never [A] get into
a band.
[E] He [Am] about too much.
The art of being a good bass player is [A] not to be [D] noticed until you
stop playing.
This is a classic [Dm] hate comment bassists get when we play solos.
Because if we're
playing a solo that must obviously [A] mean that we have no idea how to play a standard bass line with
the rest of the band.
I've actually been in [B] quite a lot of bands over [Am] the last [Dm] 15 years and [E] pretty
much all of them loved it when I played [F] solos.
As long as you know when to keep it simple and when
to play [Am] solos then everything will be fine.
Here's me playing a bass solo.
[D] [D#] [E] [Em]
[A#]
[E]
[A]
And [G]
[A]
[G] [E] [G]
here's me playing a [F#] bass line.
[C#]
[D] [D#] [F#] [G]
[G#]
[C#] [E] [F]
[E] So yeah the fact that someone's playing a bass solo [D] doesn't
mean they can't [F] play bass lines.
Let's take [Bm] a look at the next hate [Am] comment.
Tapping on bass has to
be one of the most [Gm] pointless [Dm] things ever.
Just get a piano already.
[A]
Idiot.
Nice piano [Dm] work.
Do you play
[Am] bass?
I'm [E] so glad I [G] found some of [F#] these.
[F] Some people say that because I'm tapping on bass [C] I
might as well be [Dm] playing piano.
I actually do [Em] play piano too and I [F] really enjoy it.
I [C] just really
like the sound of the [A#] bass and something [D] played on piano versus bass tapping sounds completely
[E] different.
I'll give you an example.
Let's take something like Fur Elise.
Here's how it sounds on
piano.
[Am] [E]
[Am] [E] [Am]

[Am] [E] [F] [A]
[E] [A] [C]
[G] [Am] [E]
[Bm]
[Am] [E] [Am]
[A] So you can hear there's a very different tone and I
just happen to really like the tone of the bass.
It's also really convenient to be able to switch
[Em] between slap tap and finger style rather than running over to a piano every time the tapping
[E] section starts.
All right let's read the next hate comment.
If your [A] goal is to play solos then [E] bass
is [F] the wrong instrument for [C] you.
I don't know about you but it [A] kind of sounds like he wants me to play [B] a bass solo!
[E] [F]
[F#] [G]

[D] [E]
[A]
[G] [Fm] [A] [Em]

[G] [A] [E] [G]
[D] [G]
[Em] [D] [G] I don't know about you [D]
[Em] [D] [Em] but [D]
[E] [F] [F#] [Em] it kind of sounds like he wants me to play a bass solo!
Well that was fun.

Bassists are just
failed frustrated [G] guitarists.
This is another classic.
Anyone who's playing bass must have
tried [Bm] guitar [F] first, not been [Am] good enough and then settled for bass right?
Well here's a video of me
playing guitar.
[E]
In fact here's what Samurai Guitarist has to say about whether bass is just a
dumbed [C] down version of guitar.
Is bass really just [G] a dumbed down version of guitar?
[Em] In the [A] early stages
it's definitely [G] easier but the things that make a [B] bass player [C] great are extremely difficult to master.
That initial physical learning curve on bass is significantly easier.
After all [D#] you usually just
have to play [Gm] one note instead [D] of full chords.
In [Em] my opinion what makes a bassist [F#] great is their
[G] groove and feel.
Of course this is important [F] for guitar [Gm] as well but we have a bit more leniency
there.
Say I'm playing in a [E] band and the other [G#] rhythm [A] guitarist isn't [G] grooving [C] that's not nearly
as [C#] terrible as if the bass [E] player is a mess.
Feel is an obscure [G] concept something deep down in our
[Gm] musicality it takes years to shape and isn't easy to [E] practice.
And I pretty much agree with him on
all of that although I will say once you start getting into the really advanced solos then bass
is pretty much just as hard as guitar even from a technique [G#] as opposed to just feel standpoint.
[A#] All right next [E] hate [D] comment.
Nice [E] chops but can you hold down a [Dm] groove?
The fact that someone's
playing something [E] technical doesn't mean they can't hold down a [Dm] groove.
In fact I think a bass
solo doesn't even need to have a groove.
[Gm] For example [Am] here's my version [G] of Victor Wooten's version [D] of Overjoyed.
[E]
[C] [E]
[C#m] [C]
[B] [E]
[C#m] [G#m] [F#m]
[F#] [E]
[B] [E]
[C#m] [F#]
[G#]
[C#] [G] [G#]
[Cm] [G#] [E] [C#m]
[F#] [B] [C#m]
[A]
[E] [F#]
[B] [D] [A] [C#]
[B] [G#]
[D#] [E] [G#]
[D#] [E] [B] [C#] [B] [E]
[C#m] [C]
[B]
[E]
[A] [E] So at the end of the day I do think that in most popular music [Em] bass sounds great when it's just
playing a grooving solid bass line that locks in with the drummer and supports the rest of the
band.
And I [Am] completely understand bass players who just want to do that and never want [E] to play a solo.
But that doesn't [B] mean that there's [G] anything wrong with bass solos and it also definitely doesn't
mean that people should be told [C] off and harassed just for playing something technical and flashy
or even just melodic.
If the music sounds good [G] it really [F#] doesn't matter that much [G] what instrument
is playing it.
And I think we should all be open [Em] to genuine critique but if you love [G] playing [A] bass
in a melodic and soloistic way then don't let hate comments [D] stop you from doing it.
Thank you guys so
much for watching.

like the sound of the [A#] bass and something [D] played on piano versus bass tapping sounds completely
[E] different.
I'll give you an example.
Let's take something like Fur Elise.
Here's how it sounds on
piano. _ _
_ [Am] _ _ _ _ [E] _ _ _
[Am] _ _ _ [E] _ _ [Am] _ _ _
[E] _ _ _ [A] _ _ _ [E] _ _
[Am] _ _ _ _ [E] _ _ And now here's how it sounds on bass.
_ _ [Fm] _ [A] _ _
[E] _ _ _ [Am] _ _ [E] _ _ [Am] _
_ _ _ [E] _ _ [A] _ _ _
[E] _ _ [Fm] _ [Am] _ _ _ [E] _ _
[Am] _ _ [E] _ _ _ [F] _ [A] _ _
[E] _ _ [A] _ _ [C] _ _ _ _
[G] _ _ [Am] _ _ _ [E] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ [Bm] _
[Am] _ _ _ _ [E] _ _ [Am] _
[A] So you can hear there's a very different tone and I
just happen to really like the tone of the bass.
It's also really convenient to be able to switch
[Em] between slap tap and finger style rather than running over to a piano every time the tapping
[E] section starts.
All right let's read the next hate comment.
If your [A] goal is to play solos then [E] bass
is [F] the wrong instrument for [C] you.
I don't know about you but it [A] kind of sounds like he wants me to play [B] a bass solo!
_ [E] _ [F] _
[F#] _ [G] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [Em] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [E] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [D] _ [E] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ [A] _
[G] _ _ [Fm] _ _ [A] _ _ _ [Em] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [D] _ _
[G] _ [A] _ _ _ _ [E] _ _ [G] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[D] _ _ [G] _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [Em] _ _ [D] _ _ [G] _ I don't know about you _ _ _ _ _ _ [D] _
_ [Em] _ [D] _ _ [Em] _ but [D] _
[E] _ [F] _ [F#] [Em] it kind of sounds like he wants me to play a bass solo! _ _
Well that was fun.
Tap subscribe if you want to help spread the power of bass.
Bassists are just
failed frustrated [G] guitarists.
This is another classic.
Anyone who's playing bass must have
tried [Bm] guitar [F] first, not been [Am] good enough and then settled for bass right?
Well here's a video of me
_ _ playing guitar.
[E] _
_ In fact here's what Samurai Guitarist has to say about whether bass is just a
dumbed [C] down version of guitar.
[E] _ _
_ _ _ [C] _ _ [E] _ _ _
_ _ _ [C#m] _ _ _ [C] _ _
[B] _ _ _ [E] _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [C#m] _ _ _ _ [G#m] _ [F#m] _
_ _ [F#] _ _ _ [E] _ _ _
[B] _ _ _ _ [E] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [C#m] _ _ _ [F#] _
_ _ _ _ [G#] _ _ _ _
_ _ [C#] _ _ _ [G] _ _ [G#] _
[Cm] _ _ _ [G#] _ _ _ [E] _ [C#m] _
[F#] _ _ _ [B] _ _ _ _ [C#m] _
_ [A] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[E] _ _ _ _ _ _ _ [F#] _
[B] _ _ [D] _ _ [A] _ [C#] _ _ _
[B] _ _ _ _ _ _ [G#] _ _
[D#] _ _ _ [E] _ _ [G#] _ _ _
[D#] _ [E] _ _ [B] _ [C#] _ [B] _ _ [E] _
_ _ [C#m] _ _ _ [C] _ _ _
[B] _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [E] _ _ _ _ _ _
[A] _ [E] _ So _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ at the end of the day I do think that in most popular music [Em] bass sounds great when it's just
playing a grooving solid bass line that locks in with the drummer and supports the rest of the
Remember to tap like [Em] and subscribe if you haven't already and I'll see you in the next video.
