[Ab]
[Gb] [E] They kind of had everything for me.
[Ab] [A] The look, you know, and obviously the [G] music.
And [E] Marry's voice.
I want [A] you to know [D] that I love [A] you, baby
I want you to know that [G] I care
[Bb] None of us could [E] play, you know?
I mean, I just started to play the bass
and Stevie just started to play the guitar.
But as all that, we was [Am] keen.

They were mods who formed a band.
They weren't a band who became mods.

[Em]
It's so rare in bands, you know.
There's always like the bass player always looks [D] wrong.
[A] You know, [E] you can get rid of [D] this person or that person.
But to [G] see four people that haven't been put together,
they weren't manufactured, just came together.
It's [E] so unique and so fantastic.
The small faces, we're all about the same sort of height.
They all had, I wouldn't say the same haircuts,
but they sort of like, they all dressed virtually the same,
but they just looked like a group.
Pure one-up.
Even [Abm] Ringo was shorter than the others, you know.
[E] Do you know what I mean?
But there was this [Ab] singer who [E] looked like he was marrying someone else's voice.
Because he had such a strong voice.
More electric than anyone you've ever met.
Funniest guy I've ever met.
Sharpest guy I've ever met.
Cleverest guy I've ever met.
Ball leader.
He was small, [Bb] cheeky.
Not the sort of person you'd think of as a leader, is it, [Abm] really?
He just had that magnetism.
[B]
[Eb] [Abm] I met Steve Merrick when he was about 12.
He [D] was in Oliver.
[E] He was my Artful Dodger.
He was one of the best Artful Dodgers I ever had.
Steve played the Artful Dodger.
I think a lot of what he did rubbed off on us.
I mean, we were all, we all turned into little Artful Dodgers.
[Em]
We [G]
[E] had a guy called Terry the Egg.
He was our agent, and he got us a residency
at the Cavern Club in Leicester Square.
Even though we was kind of busking, we got very popular, you know?
We pulled in more of a crowd each week.
And in the end, some guy called Don Arden turned [G] up,
and they signed us up as a manager.
He [E] literally took us from a little band unknown,
with a small reputation,
into a very big, important band, you know,
pop band at that time.
Oh, upon us I [A]
shall [E] be
Yeah, you have a thing [B] on a [E] pure heart
[A] A [B] lot [E] of [A] people say they're managers,
and all they can [E] do is collect money from a record company,
you know, and arrange an interview or something.
Build a [A] neck.
I mean, he [E] was old school, you know?
[B] He was a [E] hustler.
We went some place I don't know
[A] [B] [E] We was all [A] kind of quite excited, you know?
[E] Because he [Ab] had
He had Gene Vincent.
He'd had Gene Vincent, anyway.
He'd had him.
He had us as well.
[N]
I remember everything being black and white growing up,
and then suddenly everybody started to wear colourful [E] things.
You know, that's what I loved about the modern world.
[Bb] [Abm] [G]
White trousers.
You never saw boys in [Ab] white trousers.
And these jazzy jackets, lovely jackets,
but you had to be brave [G] to walk out and wear them.
Small Faces [Fm] didn't need anyone to teach them how to be [E] mods.
They taught everybody else how to be mods.
Small Faces were really the authentic [A] mod band.
[E] Girls, [A] hold [E] my hand
[A] Ah, [E] girl, [A] I know you'll [B] understand
Girl, [A] but I've been waiting for a long, long time
[E] Think [B] everything's going to turn out fine
[E] Hey, [A] hey, it's alright
The [Ab] teen dropper thing turned
It became quite [Dbm] a nose, really,
because after that, after we had the hit record,
[Abm]
[E] we never heard ourselves on the stage again.
Small Faces didn't.
It was all [G] screaming all the [Dbm] time, you [Abm] know?
It was quite frightening, actually.
[A] You know, they just used to go to the [E] stairs and stand up, scream.
And all I could see was Steve's [A] face
and Steve's standing up where he [Gb] was really giving it his all.
[B] And you couldn't hear him, [E] just screaming.
[A] I think Steve must have pissed him [Gb] off more
because he was getting more of that [A] attention, you know?
[E] Blatant girls.
Somebody [Dbm] [A]
[B] once said to me that [E] at the end of one Small Faces concert,
all they could smell was urine,
because the girls were just,
[Gb] [E] They kind of had everything for me.
[Ab] [A] The look, you know, and obviously the [G] music.
And [E] Marry's voice.
