Hi [Bb] everyone,
[Bbm] Anthony [Gb] Fantano here, Internet's busiest music [N] nerd, and doing a little list.
I've been wanting to do something like this a while, a short 10 song list of my all-time
favorite Velvet Underground songs.
The Velvet Underground, they have a number of documentaries [Bb] about them, some of them
are actually on YouTube and you can watch yourself.
Those can [G] condense the band's history and just their place [Bb] contextually in music better
than I can in a short [B] video for sure.
But the Velvet Underground are an important [Bb] band to me.
I was not all too impressed with their music, [E] I remember when I had first heard them, but
after returning and just sort of really, I guess, getting a grip of what [B] they were trying
to do with their music, [N] they just give things like rough around the edges recordings, very
abstract and sometimes very lewd and [Gb] offensive lyrics, and very simple [Bb] instrumentation that
is sometimes performed with a very kind of amateur display of [C] musicianship.
All of these [G] things, [Bb] to me, which originally were not all too impressive, all [Am] of a sudden
kind of became [F] [Ab] impressive and in a way became kind of beautiful.
[Gb] I feel like it takes a [Em] special band, a special group of people who have a [Gb] really great vision
to take things that people usually classify as being bad, ugly, sort of subpar, and really
make [Gm] them [Gb] great, really turn them into something special and kind of unique.
I feel like the Velvet Underground and their very short discography did that very well
across several records, and the songs that I have picked [N] in this 10-song mix are definitely
a show of that.
A few of them that I definitely want to bring up, Venus Infer's [Am] beautiful song.
Not beautiful [E] in the traditional sense, but you know, [Gb] great track, kinky sex lyrics, John
Cale's viola, violin, whatever on that track is just wailing, screaming, and from what
I hear he put different strings on it to get that kind of unique sound to come out of it.
It is a twisted song.
[Bb] Furthermore, Sunday Morning, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful [Gm] songs to ever be written, period.
That's it.
Can't say any more [B] about it than that.
Sister [Bb] Ray, damn man.
[C] This 17-minute track, I believe, which came off the band's second full-length LP, is just
this [Gb] long, twisted, disgusting rock and roll jam detailing this story having to do with
cops [Ab] busting in on this [N] place where there's drugs going on, there's like an orgy, I believe,
I believe there's like transsexuals involved as well.
It's a pretty sick track, and this 17-minute track went on much longer than that whenever
the band would play it in a live setting.
Basically, the handful of the records that this band put [Bb] out when they were around are
very important [Abm] to me.
[Gb] Really fantastic music, music [Em] that I'm sure I wouldn't see music the way I do if I had
not heard them.
[C] And basically looking to kind of share them with you guys.
Like I said, this [Bb] list is below this video.
I listed it out via text.
[A] You can search any of these songs on the internet and probably hear them, [Bb] but the entire list
of [E] tracks is also [Gb] available to stream on Spotify as well.
So follow those links, read that list, easily put it together pretty fast.
My favorite Velvet Underground tracks of all time.
And that's it.
Thanks for watching.
[Bb] Love you.
