[N] Yeah, welcome back the two of you.
I guess John and Justin were here last.
Yes, we were.
Where were you two guys?
In bed.
He likes to get us up in the mornings.
Yeah, these are not particularly rock star hours.
Well, we got in from Los Angeles last night, you know, and so I think it's, I don't know what time it is now, five in the morning or whatever.
Yeah, so just about the time you guys would be rolling in, huh?
You got it.
Tuesday afternoon in England.
25 years of togetherness.
But didn't you split up once for a couple of years?
About four years.
Four years.
Was that a major fight?
Not really. Fortunately not.
Scandal, anything?
No, just got bored with each other.
You guys have never been about dirt.
You are the class act of rock and roll.
I am not being a priest.
He's about 380.
I thought he was about a canning arrest for a while.
We just never got caught.
Very discreet.
So then how was it that you got back together?
We got back together to actually put our greatest hits together and we were just seeing each other all the time.
There was no argument or anything like that.
I think we just needed, I mean, I was 19 when I started, you know, so we just needed some time apart to really set our own lives in order.
We never had a life outside of the band.
So this part of it, this part of the ride is more fun, isn't it?
You relax, you did what you had to do.
It's better now, yeah.
And a whole new generation of fans discovering this incredible music.
That's right.
Through the 80s we had a couple of big hit singles and then we did the Red Rocks video just a couple of years ago.
A lot of young people.
A lot of young people come to see the band now.
What was the very first gig like?
Does anybody have any reminiscences?
The first one, yeah.
We played the Fillmore East.
Oh, Fillmore East, yes.
In New York City, right?
February 68, yeah.
And was the reception, was it a disaster?
Why?
Actually, the Bugs Bunny concert was better than us.
Why?
68, well, we're here.
[Bb] [Db] If you remember the 60s, you weren't there, were you?
That's exactly right.
I'm the only one who remembers the 60s.
But it was a disaster.
One of our, we had this instrument called the Mellotron, which gives us that orchestral kind of sound, it's before synthesizers, and it's a very mechanical kind of instrument.
Anyway, it just went wrong that night.
We brought it all the way from England, you know, with ourselves and one roadie, and [Em] we set it up, and it just, like, the difference in the voltage fluctuations.
Oh, my.
And did the critics kill you?
The three of us, the three of us played.
Just played the gig.
They were great, they had these flyers on the seats, and they just made them all into these planes, and they were zooming around.
So in a way, it turned out to be the first unflogged concert.
